Church of Saint Andrew in Ponferrada
The Church of Saint Andrew is one of the most emblematic monuments of Ponferrada, located in the heart of the old town, right at the foot of the imposing Castillo de los Templarios. This temple is a notable stop for pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago Frances.
History of the Church of Saint Andrew, Ponferrada
Although its origins go back to a medieval church, the present-day structure was built in the late 17th century in the Baroque style. It has a Latin-cross floor plan with a single nave covered by a barrel vault with lunettes. Over the transept rises a dome on pendentives, topped with a lantern. The three-tier bell tower was completed in a later phase and stands out for its lighter design in its upper section.
Interior and Artistic Heritage
Inside, a Baroque main altarpiece stands out, the work of Jose Ovalle and Andres de Benavente. For years, the church housed the Christ of the Fortress, a 14th-century Romanesque sculpture from the castle. Today, this image is held at the Basilica de la Encina.
Connection to the Castillo de los Templarios
The proximity to the Castillo de los Templarios is not merely geographical. On the church’s tower, two Tau crosses carved in stone survive, from the castle, reinforcing the historical link between the two monuments.
Holy Week and Traditions
The Church of Saint Andrew plays a central role in Holy Week in Ponferrada. Important processions organised by the Brotherhood of Jesus of Nazareth set out from here, such as the Procession of the Meeting and the Procession of the Burial, which wind through the streets of the old town and hold great cultural and religious significance.
