Its presbytery is preceded by a round triumphal arch.

History of the Church of Saint Peter of Terradillos de los Templarios

Terradillos de los Templarios is a small town with origins dating back to the 6th century, when a Roman settlement existed in the area. In the 12th century, during the repopulation of Castile, King Alfonso VIII granted the town to the Order of the Temple in 1191. Although the Camino de Santiago did not originally pass through the centre of Terradillos, it did pass through two nearby sites that are now deserted: the Hospital of Saint John and the Templar Convent.

Architecture of the Church of Saint Peter

The church has a single-nave structure, built of brick, a material common in the area. Inside, a 14th-century Gothic Christ stands out, along with two altarpieces: the 17th-century main altarpiece and the Epistle-side one, in the Baroque style of the 18th century. The presbytery is marked by a round triumphal arch. Although it was rebuilt in the 19th century, some original ashlar stones survive in the tower.

Legends of the Church of Saint Peter in Terradillos de los Templarios

A local legend tells of a “hen that laid golden eggs“, said to have been buried by the last Templars on the Alto Torbosillo to keep it from being taken to Santiago. This hill is visible from the Camino de Santiago and adds an air of mystery to the place.
