Former Parish Church of Saint Peter in Villalcázar de Sirga
The Former Parish Church of Saint Peter in Villalcázar de Sirga, in Palencia Province, is a historic monument reflecting the region’s rich cultural and religious heritage. Built in the 11th century, this Romanesque church was the town’s first parish and was linked to the Monastery of Saint Zoilus of Carrión de los Condes. Although it was eventually overshadowed by the imposing Church of Santa María la Blanca, the Church of Saint Peter retains architectural and artistic features of great value, such as its 12th-century baptismal font and Romanesque capitals reused as holy water stoups.
Recently, the Spanish Federation of Friends of the Camino de Santiago Associations acquired the old church with the aim of restoring it and turning it into a hostel for pilgrims and a study classroom, thereby reviving its original function of welcoming travellers on the Camino de Santiago Frances.
This project aims not only to preserve historical heritage, but also to offer a functional, educational space for pilgrims and visitors travelling the Camino.
