What is there in Sansol

Sansol is a town and municipality in the western Estella area, in Navarra, on the Camino Frances.

With fewer than a hundred residents, Sansol is one of those villages pilgrims barely have time to take in, because from its ridge you can already see, across a gully, the houses of Torres del Río. Its name seems to speak of the sun (sol), but it actually comes from a church dedicated to San Zoilo, the martyr of Córdoba: medieval documents sometimes already write it as “Sancto Sole”, a popular confusion that ended up sticking. Today the church of San Zoilo, at the top, is the village’s landmark and a good viewpoint over the fields of the valley. Sansol has a couple of charming places to stay for anyone who wants to split the stage and reach Viana calmly the next day.

Distances from Sansol

From Sansol to Viana it is about 11.4 km.

To Logroño it is about 21 km.

And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 637.8 km remain.

Sansol on the Camino Frances

The Camino crosses Sansol just before Torres del Río, and from the upper part of the village a wide view opens over the Linares valley and, in the distance, the Ebro, which the pilgrim will keep in sight all the way to Logroño.

For such a small place it is welcoming: a couple of rural lodgings and quiet corners where you can stop and rest.

What to see and do in Sansol

  • Step inside the Church of Saint Zoilus Sansol, the building that gives the village its name.
  • Look out from the viewpoints over the valley, best late in the afternoon.
  • Walk to Torres del Río, on the other side of the hollow, or back towards Los Arcos along easy tracks.
  • Try the local cooking in its rural houses and bars.

Church of Saint Zoilus Sansol

The name Sansol

Sansol is a saint’s name in disguise: it comes from the ecclesia Sancti Zoili, the church of Saint Zoilus, and over time popular speech brought it closer to the word «sol», sun. The same happened to other places such as Sanzoles (Zamora) or Sonsoles (Ávila).

Heritage of Sansol

The main building is the parish church of Saint Zoilus, of medieval origin and much altered over the centuries, which overlooks the houses from above and keeps details of interest for lovers of religious art.

In its streets you will see stone mansions that keep the feel of the farming villages of Tierra Estella.

Landscape

All around stretch vineyards, cereal fields and gentle hills, pleasant country for walking or cycling. The Melgar river crosses the municipality and adds a touch of green to a mostly dry landscape.

What to eat

The food is classic Navarrese: garden vegetables, lamb in chilindrón sauce, cured meats and local wines, already very close to the Rioja appellation. A good excuse to eat at leisure before moving on.

A quiet stop

Sansol is small, but it is a good place to stop for pilgrims who want to avoid the bustle of the larger towns. It is very close to Los Arcos, Torres del Río and Viana, so it lets you plan the stage flexibly.
