Stage 10: Santo Domingo de la Calzada to Belorado with Jhonatan Barrios
Jhonatan Barrios and his group are leaving the hostel and heading towards Belorado. His voice is affected by a sore throat. The stretch is around 24 kilometres and the day is clear. Jhonatan hopes the sun will help ease his throat as he continues on. Despite the pain and the cold night at the hostel, Jhonatan and the other pilgrims set off. Along the way, they pass the Ermita del Puente, built in 1917 in honour of Santo Domingo, replacing an earlier chapel destroyed by flooding in 1906.
Accompanied by three Spanish pilgrims—Frank from Valladolid, Rafa from Madrid and Lety from Valencia—Jhonatan feels a real sense of excitement crossing bridges along the way. The group carries on and reaches the first village, Grañón, which has hostels, restaurants and bars. Passing through Grañón, they take in the Church of Saint John the Baptist, a late Gothic building constructed at the end of the 14th century.
After leaving Grañón, the group heads on into Castilla y León. Along the way, they pass through several villages such as Redecilla del Camino and Castildelgado, and reach Viloria de Rioja, the birthplace of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Finally, they arrive in Belorado, a medieval town of Roman origin. After looking for a place to stay, they find the Albergue Cuatro Cantones, which offers better comfort and services. In Belorado, they visit the Church of Santa María, the Monastery of Santa Clara and enjoy some artisan chocolate before resting up and getting ready for the next stage.
¡Buen Camino, pilgrims!
