The Camino de Santiago Frances<\/a><\/strong> is one of the oldest and most iconic pilgrimage routes in Europe. For more than a thousand years, pilgrims<\/a> have travelled this route to reach the city of Santiago de Compostela<\/a>, home to the tomb of Saint James the Greater<\/a><\/strong>. The route has become a unique spiritual, cultural and tourist experience, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1993. In this article, we look back at the key facts and dates behind this recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Background<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Camino de Santiago Frances<\/a><\/strong> has been a major pilgrimage route since the Middle Ages. For centuries, pilgrims travelled from all over Europe to the city of Santiago de Compostela<\/strong><\/a> to venerate the relics of Saint James the Greater<\/a><\/strong>. The route became one of the main channels of communication and trade between Europe and the Iberian Peninsula, and an important cultural and spiritual centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The revival of the Camino de Santiago took place in the mid-20th century, when it began to be used by an ever-growing number of pilgrims and tourists. The route has become a unique experience combining culture, history, spirituality and nature. Thousands of pilgrims<\/a> and tourists walk the route every year, turning the Camino de Santiago into a major economic driver for the regions it passes through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognition of the Camino de Santiago Frances as a World Heritage Site<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The process of recognising the Camino de Santiago as a UNESCO World Heritage Site began in 1984, when the Spanish Government submitted the nomination to the World Heritage Committee. The nomination was supported by the French Government and by various bodies and associations from both countries, which highlighted the historical, artistic and cultural value of the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Camino de Santiago nomination was submitted in two stages. In 1985, the first part was submitted, including a description of the route and its history, as well as a list of the monuments and historic buildings found along it. In 1986, the second part was submitted, including a detailed analysis of the route’s universal value and the protection and conservation measures then underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Camino de Santiago nomination was evaluated by the World Heritage Committee at its tenth session, held in Paris in 1986. The Committee highlighted the historical, artistic and cultural value of the route, and stressed its importance as a living testimony to the history of Europe. However, it was felt that the nomination required further information and clarification regarding the Camino de Santiago’s universal value, and the decision was postponed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Committee’s next session, held in Florence in 1987, it was decided not to include the Camino de Santiago on the World Heritage List, since the nomination did not meet all the required criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the 1987 rejection, the Spanish and French authorities did not abandon the project of having the Camino de Santiago declared a World Heritage Site. In the years that followed, significant research, restoration and conservation work was carried out on the route and on the monuments and buildings found along it. More data and information was gathered to support the Camino de Santiago’s universal value, and work was carried out to improve the route’s infrastructure and to promote tourism and culture in the areas it passes through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1992, the Camino de Santiago nomination was submitted once again to the World Heritage Committee. This time, the nomination included more information and a more detailed analysis of the Camino de Santiago’s universal value. The Committee re-evaluated the nomination and, at its sixteenth session, held in Marrakesh in 1993, decided to add the Camino de Santiago Frances to the World Heritage List.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNESCO’s declaration of the Camino de Santiago as a World Heritage Site represented a major international recognition of this pilgrimage route’s historical, artistic and cultural value. It also helped to increase tourist interest in the route and to encourage the conservation and protection of the monuments and historic buildings found along it. Today, the Camino de Santiago is one of Spain’s leading tourist and cultural attractions, and remains a living testimony to European history and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n
