href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"86\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Camino de Santiago Franc\u00e9s<\/a><\/strong> has left a deep mark on the history of the town of Villava. This municipality, located about 35 kilometres from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/navarra\/roncesvalles\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"10891\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roncesvalles<\/a><\/strong>, was once a particularly hard and demanding stage for <a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/peregrinos\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"5880\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pilgrims<\/a> walking this route on foot. The harshness of the stretch meant that both Villava and the church of la Trinidad de Arre became key points for rest and recovery for walkers before facing the demanding climb towards <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/navarra\/pamplona\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11050\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pamplona<\/a><\/strong>, which lies very close by. These moments of rest were essential for regaining strength and continuing the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nowadays, with a much more organised Camino de Santiago divided into stages for the enjoyment of a wider public, Villava has become one of the main gateways into Pamplona, the first major city on the Camino within the Iberian Peninsula. Pilgrims setting out from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/navarra\/zubiri\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"10964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zubiri<\/a><\/strong> follow this route crossing the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/lo\/puente-de-la-trinidad-de-arre\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"gd_place\" data-id=\"14180\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Puente de la Trinidad de Arre<\/a><\/strong> bridge and the historic Bat\u00e1n de Villava. This stretch, which can be tiring, leads many walkers to seek well-earned rest at the modern hostel in Villava, set up by the municipality to provide comfort and hospitality to pilgrims. This hostel, located on the banks of the river Ulzama, stands out as the only first-category one in the whole Comarca de Pamplona, making it an important reference point for those travelling this route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, the historic centre of Villava, characterised by its emblematic Calle Mayor, is laid out along the course of this historic pilgrimage route. This street still preserves the distinctive medieval charm of the Camino de Santiago today, standing as a living testimony to the historical and cultural significance Villava has held over the centuries for all the pilgrims who have walked this road to Santiago de Compostela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Toponymy of Villava<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The toponymy of Villava has been a matter of debate among Navarrese historians, particularly regarding the name of the settlement that existed before the town was founded by Sancho VI the Wise. One of the most widespread hypotheses holds that the original name of the place may have been Atarrabia. However, this theory has not been confirmed by either archaeological evidence or historical documentation that would support it conclusively. The exact origin and meaning of this term remain uncertain, although it seems clear that its root comes from the Basque language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some linguists have attempted to offer possible explanations for the origin of the name Atarrabia. According to these theories, the name could derive from a combination of several Basque words: \u00abate\u00bb, meaning gate or narrow pass; \u00abArre\u00bb, the name of a nearby locality; and \u00abibia\u00bb, meaning ford or water crossing. Near Villava there is a narrow pass on the way to the neighbouring village of Arre, where the river Ulzama runs through a gorge. This geographical feature could be related to the origin of the name, which would be interpreted as \u00abthe ford of the Arre gorge\u00bb. However, there is no general consensus among experts on this interpretation, so the exact meaning of Atarrabia remains a matter of speculation. Despite this, historical documents such as the Fuero General de Navarra, drafted around the mid-12th century, already mention the \u00abPuente de Atarrabia\u00bb, demonstrating how ancient this term is in the local context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 12th century, King Sancho VI the Wise decided to found a town next to the hamlet of Atarrabia and granted it its own charter, based on the charters of the new borough of Pamplona. As was customary at the time, the king gave the town a name in Romance Latin: Villa Noua, meaning New Town. This name had a linguistic root similar to that of many other localities founded in Europe during that period. However, this town was established in an area of the Kingdom of Navarre where Basque was predominantly spoken, and over time its original Romance name evolved naturally. Thus, Villa Noua gradually became Villanova, then Villaova, and finally Villava. Among Basque speakers, the same name was also adapted to Basque spelling and pronunciation, giving rise to variants such as \u00abBilleba\u00bb or \u00abBillaba\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the 20th century, with the recovery and revaluation of Basque linguistic and cultural heritage, the old name Atarrabia began to be used again in Basque to refer to the town. In 1991, the Government of Navarre, through Decreto Foral 543\/1991, approved the municipality\u2019s official adoption of a dual co-official naming system: in Spanish the name would be Villava, while in Basque it would be Atarrabia. Since then, both names have been officially recognised and used, reflecting both the Romance heritage and the Basque influence in the town\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Demonym of Villava<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>demonym of Villava<\/strong> is <strong>villav\u00e9s<\/strong> or <strong>villavesa<\/strong>, and in <strong>Basque<\/strong> it is<strong> atarrabiarra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History of Villava<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The history of this town began to take significant shape when it was refounded in 1184 by the Navarrese king Sancho VI, also known as Sancho the Wise. This event marked a key moment in the consolidation of the town as an organised settlement with its own identity within the Kingdom of Navarre. Since then, the town underwent major transformations over the centuries, witnessing numerous historically significant events that left a deep mark on its development and on the daily life of its inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One example of this was the Napoleonic Wars, which had a devastating impact on many regions, including this town. During this period, its inhabitants faced great hardship due to military conflict and the social and economic consequences of the war. Later, during the 19th century, the town\u2019s stability was also affected by another major conflict, the Carlist Wars. This period brought a climate of political and social instability that hindered the progress and wellbeing of local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these difficult periods, in the mid-19th century the town began a process of transformation that would bring significant positive change. It was during this stage that its industrialisation began, with the establishment of a paper industry that played a crucial role in the local economy. This activity served as a basis for attracting new investment and similar industries, further diversifying the economy. Wood, cardboard and spirits factories were subsequently established, helping to drive the town\u2019s economic development and generate employment for its inhabitants.
