class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Toponymy of Burlada

According to the renowned historian Julio Caro Baroja, the name of this town originates from the Low Latin word brustulare, meaning «to burn». Its etymological meaning could therefore be interpreted as «Burnt». Over the centuries, the name of this town has gone through various versions before reaching its current form. For example, a historical document from the Monastery of Leyre, dated to the late 11th century, mentions this place under the names “Buruslata” and “Bruslata“. Later, other old names are recorded, including “Brusalada” and “Bruslada“, documented during the 12th century. Then, by the 15th century, the name is recorded as “Burllada“. Over time, the name gradually evolved until it settled into «Burlada» in Spanish, the form used today.

On the other hand, in Basque, this place has historically been referred to as Burlata, which is currently the standard form in this language and which also holds co-official status alongside Spanish. In a variant of the southern High Navarrese dialect, a specific variety spoken in the Cuenca de Pamplona region, the place was also known by the name Burleta. This set of linguistic variations reflects not only the passage of time but also the different linguistic contexts and influences that have shaped the region’s history.

History of Burlada

It is known that the Kings of Navarre chose Burlada as a place to spend periods of rest and leisure. In this town they had a palace which was eventually demolished. This palace had a private connection to an old Romanesque church, which was also destroyed in the mid-20th century. Although neither building still exists, they represent an important part of Burlada’s history. Another notable historical feature is the Romanesque bridge crossing the river Arga as it passes through this town, a testament to the area’s heritage value. Unlike the palace and the church, the bridge survives to this day and remains a historical reference to Burlada’s past.

Demonym of Burlada

The demonym of Burlada is burladés or burladesa and in Basque it is burlatarra.

Burlada

Country

Spain

Autonomous community

Navarra

Province

Navarra

Merindad

Pamplona

Comarca

Cuenca de Pamplona

Judicial district

Pamplona

Mancomunidad

Pamplona

Location

42°49′35″N 1°36′56″O

Elevation

423 m

Area

2.12 km²

Demonym

burladés, burladesa
(eus.) burlatarra

Predominant language

Mixed-language area

Postal code

31600

Dialling code

948

Twinned with

Floirac (France)

Website

www.burlada.es

Burlada Burlada, known as Burlata in Standard Basque and also officially, and Burleta in the local dialect, is a locality and municipality in the Chartered Community of Navarre, Spain.
