class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">The name Azofra<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One explanation of the name makes it Arabic: it would come from \u00ab<strong>as-suxra<\/strong>\u00bb, \u00ab<strong>the tribute<\/strong>\u00bb or labour service, referring to the work vassals had to do on the lord&#8217;s land. It would be a memory of the Muslim presence in the valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chronicler Fray Gregorio de Arg\u00e1iz proposed another, Hebrew origin: \u00ab<strong>Zophar<\/strong>\u00bb, which he translated as \u00ab<strong>beautiful<\/strong>\u00bb. Whatever its root, the name already appears in documents from 1040.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Azofra and the Camino de Santiago<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Azofra<\/strong> has always lived with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"86\">Camino Frances<\/a><\/strong> passing through. In 1168 Do\u00f1a Isabel founded a hospital here, with a church of Saint Peter and its own cemetery for pilgrims who died on their way to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/lo\/cathedral-of-santiago-de-compostela\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"gd_place\" data-id=\"12591\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cathedral of Santiago<\/a><\/strong> in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/a-coruna-province\/santiago-de-compostela\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"12306\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Santiago de Compostela<\/a><\/strong>. It operated until the 19th century, although nothing of the building survives today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Traditions and festivities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">The Vera Cruz brotherhood<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded between the mid-17th and mid-18th centuries, it is the only Holy Week brotherhood in Azofra. Some twenty-five members organise the Holy Burial procession every Good Friday, accompanied by their own drum band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Patron saint festivities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main festivities are held in honour of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/saints\/saint-roch\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"14632\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saint Roch<\/a><\/strong>, the town&#8217;s patron and the pilgrim saint par excellence, with religious and popular events that bring the whole village together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">What Azofra lives from<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a farming village: potatoes, sugar beet, vines and vegetables. The nearness of N\u00e1jera allows many residents to supplement their income with work outside farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">La Rioja Botanical Garden<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opened in 2005, it covers some 20,000 square metres with trees and plants from different parts of the world. It is an unusual, peaceful visit for anyone with a free afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Where it is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Azofra lies in the valley of the Tuerto river, about eight kilometres from N\u00e1jera, with good road access from Logro\u00f1o.
