Lying between two landmark points, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/provincia-de-burgos\/san-juan-de-ortega\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11337\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Juan de Ortega<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/provincia-de-burgos\/orbaneja-riopico\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11372\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Orbaneja Riopico<\/a><\/strong>, it offers pilgrims a peaceful setting, surrounded by nature and steeped in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its location, just before entering <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/provincia-de-burgos\/burgos\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Burgos<\/a><\/strong>, makes <strong>Villalval<\/strong> a transitional space between the rugged terrain of the <strong>Sierra de Atapuerca<\/strong> and the opening plains around Burgos. This contrast has made <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/peregrinos\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"5880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pilgrims<\/a><\/strong> remember it as a place of pause and contemplation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Historical roots of Villalval<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Villalval<\/strong> was part of the <strong>Alfoz and Jurisdiction of Burgos<\/strong>, within the district of the same name, one of the fourteen that made up the <strong>Intendencia de Burgos<\/strong> between 1785 and 1833, according to the <strong>1787 Floridablanca Census<\/strong>. At the time it held <strong>royal jurisdiction<\/strong> and was governed by a local mayor (alcalde ped\u00e1neo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For centuries, Villalval was an independent municipality of <strong>Castilla la Vieja<\/strong>, registered under INE code 095180. The <strong>land registry census<\/strong> recorded <strong>17 households and 53 residents<\/strong>, reflecting an active community for its time. However, between the 1857 census and earlier ones, it disappeared as an independent municipality, becoming part of the municipal area of <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/provincia-de-burgos\/cardenuela-riopico\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carde\u00f1uela Riopico<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Religious heritage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Ruined parish church<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old parish church, dedicated to local devotion, is now in ruins.
