Castillo<\/strong> lies to the west of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/provincia-de-burgos\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"10813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Province of Burgos<\/a><\/strong>, right in the <strong>Odra-Pisuerga<\/strong> comarca, just a few metres from the boundary with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/provincia-de-palencia\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"5597\">Province of P<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/provincia-de-palencia\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"5597\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/provincia-de-palencia\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"5597\">lencia<\/a><\/strong>. This small municipality in Castile and Le\u00f3n, at an altitude of 780 metres above sea level and bathed by the Pisuerga River, is one of the places with the greatest historical and symbolic value on the <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"86\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Camino Frances<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>. history of Itero del Castillo is marked by its role as a <strong>border point between the ancient kingdoms of Castile and Le\u00f3n<\/strong>, a fact reflected in its place name (&#8220;Itero&#8221;, from the Latin <em>interus<\/em>, meaning &#8220;place in between&#8221;). For centuries it was a place of passage, control and encounter between cultures, monarchs and pilgrims. As early as the 11th century, it was already known for its hospitality, with documented references to hospitals and shelters for travellers on the Camino de Santiago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town grew up around the <strong>medieval castle<\/strong> that gives it its name, a defensive fortress built to guard the strategic <strong>Fitero Bridge<\/strong>, which crosses the Pisuerga River. This defensive structure was key during the Middle Ages, and today its ruins still dominate the landscape as a living testament to its feudal past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading
