del Castillo has always been border land: the Pisuerga, which runs past its municipality, separated the old kingdoms of Castile and Le\u00f3n, so for centuries the place was somewhere to pass, to keep watch and to meet. Already in the Middle Ages it appears in documents as \u00abFitero del Castiello\u00bb, and it soon had houses to take in pilgrims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village grew around the <strong>castle<\/strong> that gives it its name, of which a crenellated tower survives among the houses. Its job was to guard the river crossing at the <strong>Itero bridge<\/strong>, which the Camino crosses a little further on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">What to href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/lo\/bridge-fitero\/\" data-type=\"gd_place\" data-id=\"14264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fitero Bridge<\/a><\/strong>, a medieval work of <strong>eleven arches<\/strong> over the Pisuerga linking Itero del Castillo, in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/burgos-province\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"10813\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Burgos Province<\/a><\/strong>, with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/itero-de-la-vega\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11447\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Itero de la Vega<\/a><\/strong>, in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"5597\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Palencia Province<\/a><\/strong>. Much restored over the centuries, tradition attributes it to Alfonso VI, and for the pilgrim crossing it means changing province and entering Tierra de Campos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beside the bridge stands the hermitage of San Nicol\u00e1s, the remains of a hospital founded in 1160 that an Italian confraternity of Saint James now runs as a hostel, with no electricity and the ritual of washing pilgrims&#8217; feet. The whole setting, with the river, the poplar groves and the cereal fields, is among the most photogenic on this part of the Camino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">The castle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What remains of <strong>Itero castle<\/strong> is above all its tower, of stone, crenellated, with a pointed doorway and a twin window. It played a part in the border struggles between Castile and Le\u00f3n and later watched over the traffic on the river and the Camino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a good place for a quiet stop to take in the Pisuerga valley, the farmland and the line of the Camino disappearing westwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Hospitality and festivities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With few residents all year round, the village offers pilgrims a simple, friendly welcome, far from the crowds of other stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main festivities are held for <strong>Saint Peter<\/strong>, on 29 June, with a procession, music and a communal meal, and it is not unusual for passing walkers to join in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Landscape and nature<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Itero del Castillo<\/strong> lies in the transition between the Burgos uplands and the plains of Palencia.
