class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name, \u00abhill of joy\u00bb, recalls the delight of pilgrims on seeing the towers of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/lo\/cathedral-of-santiago-de-compostela\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"gd_place\" data-id=\"12591\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela<\/a><\/strong> from here. According to tradition, the first of each group to arrive was proclaimed \u00abking\u00bb, the origin of surnames such as Rey or Leroy. Already in the Middle Ages there was a chapel dedicated to San Marcos on the summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many pilgrims took off their shoes here and walked the last stretch barefoot and in silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time the chapel fell into decline, but the hill remained a symbolic place on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"86\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Camino Frances<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">The visit of John Paul II<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1989 World Youth Day was held here with John Paul II, who had made a pilgrimage to Santiago in 1982. The hill was developed to receive hundreds of thousands of young people, and today a large monument recalls those visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Where it is<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At about 370 metres and less than 5 km from the centre of Santiago, Monte do Gozo is the last height on the Camino Franc\u00e9s; from here it is downhill all the way to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Services<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/lo\/hostel-monte-do-gozo\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"gd_place\" data-id=\"14593\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hostel Monte do Gozo<\/a><\/strong>, with several hundred beds, is one of the largest on the Camino, and there is a restaurant, a caf\u00e9 and rest areas.
