For many, this is where the Camino Frances begins.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port \u2013 Roncesvalles: Complete Guide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage Profile: Distance, Elevation and Difficulty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Distance:<\/strong> 24.2 km (Route Napoleon). <strong>Walking time:<\/strong> 7 \u2013 9 hours. <strong>Elevation change:<\/strong> around <strong>+1,250 m<\/strong> and \u2013490 m. <strong>Difficulty:<\/strong> <strong>high<\/strong> \u2014this is the most demanding stage of the entire Camino Frances. Almost 20 km of near-continuous climbing up to the Lepoeder pass (1,430 m), followed by a tough final descent. There is barely any services: only the Orisson refuge, at 7.6 km. Cyclists will need to push their bikes on many sections, and part of the route runs along the N-135 road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Route Napoleon or the Valcarlos Alternative<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two ways to cross the Pyrenees on this stage. The <strong>Route Napoleon<\/strong> climbs over the Cize passes and the Lepoeder pass: it is the classic option, the most spectacular and the toughest. The <strong>Valcarlos alternative<\/strong> follows the valley floor on a paved road, passing through the village of Valcarlos, with much gentler elevation change and a similar distance (~24 km); it is the option for anyone who is not in top shape, for cyclists, and for less experienced pilgrims. <strong>From November 1 to March 31, the Route Napoleon is closed<\/strong> due to snow and ice risk: during this period you must take the Valcarlos route, with fines of up to \u20ac12,000 for anyone who ignores the closure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to See: Monuments and Heritage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/france\/saint-jean-pied-de-port\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"16300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port<\/a>: the citadel, Rue de la Citadelle and the <strong>Porte Saint-Jacques<\/strong>. On the climb: the <strong>Virgen de Biakorri<\/strong> statue and the Thibault cross. In <a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/navarra\/roncesvalles\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"10891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roncesvalles<\/a>: the <strong>Royal Collegiate Church of Santa Mar\u00eda<\/strong> (Gothic, home to the Virgin of Roncesvalles), the tomb of King Sancho VII the Strong, the Chapel of Santiago, and the Silo of Charlemagne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Bit of History<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the year 778, in these mountains, the rearguard of <strong>Charlemagne<\/strong>&#8216;s army \u2014led by <strong>Roland<\/strong>\u2014 was wiped out by the Basques in the <strong>Battle of Roncesvalles<\/strong>, an episode that centuries later inspired <em>The Song of Roland<\/em>. The pilgrims&#8217; hospital at the collegiate church, founded around 1130, is one of the oldest and most famous on the Way of St. James. <a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/france\/saint-jean-pied-de-port\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"16300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port<\/a> was the last town of the Kingdom of Navarre north of the Pyrenees and the meeting point of three of the four great French routes (Tours, V\u00e9zelay and Le Puy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Local Food<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the French side: <strong>Bayonne ham<\/strong>, <strong>Ossau-Iraty<\/strong> sheep&#8217;s cheese, <strong>gateau basque<\/strong>, and Irouleguy wine. Once in Navarre: lamb, shepherd&#8217;s migas, river trout, and Pyrenean cheeses. At the Roncesvalles albergue, the pilgrims&#8217; dinner is a long-standing tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical Tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Check whether the Route Napoleon is open<\/strong> (closed from November 1 to March 31, and sometimes due to bad weather). <strong>Book Orisson<\/strong> weeks in advance if you want to split the stage in two. Set off early and carry <strong>1.5\u20132 liters of water<\/strong>, food, warm clothing and a rain jacket: mountain weather changes fast and there is nowhere to shelter. In fog, take extra care on the Lepoeder descent.
