Its proximity to the Castarreño hill links it to the legendary Segisama Turmoga, capital of the Turmogi, a pre-Roman people who inhabited the region before the Roman conquest.

With the arrival of Rome, the area became part of the military camp of Segisamo (later Segisama Iulia), in Sasamón, from where campaigns against the Cantabrians were directed. The Vía Aquitania ran through the territory of Olmillos, an artery linking the interior of the peninsula with Gaul and ensuring the area’s economic and cultural development. Remains of Roman pottery found at Santa Eulalia, Mostelar and la Serna bear witness to the intense Romanisation of the area.

Medieval founding and resettlement

The village of Olmillos emerged around the year 880, during the resettlement that followed the Christian Reconquest. It was contemporary with settlements such as Castrojeriz and Amaya, establishing itself as a defensive stronghold and a haven for new settlers.

The first documented mention appears in 1102 under the name villa Olmiellos. Later, the Becerro de las Behetrías (1352) confirms that Alfonso X gave the village as a dowry gift to his wife Violante, daughter of James I of Aragon.

In the 15th century, the lordship passed to the Cartagena family, converted Jews who became part of the Burgos nobility. During the Middle Ages, Olmillos was an essential point on the Camino de Santiago, with two pilgrim hospitals, one of them, that of San Juan, remaining active until the disentailment process.

Early modern period and seigneurial rule

In the 18th century, seigneurial rule passed to the Dukes of Gor. The 1787 Censo de Floridablanca records it as a seigneurial village under the jurisdiction of the Viscount of Valeria, with a local (pedaneo) mayor.

The village kept its administrative independence until 1916, when its official name changed from “Olmillos junto a Sasamón” to “Olmillos de Sasamón”. In 1981, the municipality was absorbed into Sasamón, becoming one of its hamlets.

Demographics and traditional economy

Throughout the 19th century, Olmillos came to have more than 400 residents, sustained by a farming economy based on wheat and barley, and by diversified livestock farming (sheep, cattle, pigs and poultry).

Today the local economy combines the primary sector with tourism services. There are accommodations, rural houses, restaurants, service stations and small industries that benefit from the nearby motorway and the growing profile of the Camino Frances.

The Castle of Olmillos de Sasamón

The village’s heritage jewel is the Castle of Olmillos de Sasamón, built in 1446 by Pedro de Cartagena, a councillor of Burgos. Despite its military appearance, it is a seigneurial pleasure palace, not a defensive castle.

Its towers and battlements, with their carefully crafted Gothic design, reflect the wealth and prestige of the Cartagena family. The fleur-de-lis, the family’s emblem, is carved into several parts of the building.

In the 19th century, it passed by inheritance to the houses of Franco de Guzmán and Mendoza, and later to the Dukes of Gor. In 1812 it was set on fire during the Peninsular War by the guerrilla fighters Santos Padilla and Melchor Cossio, in reprisal for collaboration with French troops.

In the 21st century, the castle was restored and converted into a four-star hotel under the name Señorío de Olmillos, combining its historic legacy with quality tourism.

Church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora

The other great monument is the Church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, begun around 1522. It is a Gothic-Renaissance hall church, with three naves of equal height covered by ribbed vaults.

The tower, completed in 1618 by García de Arce the younger, follows the Herrerian style, topped with ball finials. The clock dates from the 17th century, and the current dome, added in 1921, replaced an older one that was at risk of collapse.

The main altarpiece, begun in 1654, is the work of Diego de Arroyo and Juan de Valtierra, with sculptures by Juan de Pobes and Juan de los Helgueros, and gilding completed by Alonso Álvarez de Ruyales in 1682. It has three tiers and an attic with relief scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin, accompanied by sculptures of Apostles and Church Fathers.

The church also preserves minor altarpieces dedicated to the Souls, the Rosary, Saint John and San Andrés, as well as a 14th-century Crucifixion of great artistic value.

Culture and traditions of Olmillos de Sasamón

Olmillos keeps a festive calendar full of symbolism:

3 May: Feast of the Cruz de Mayo (May Cross).

15 August: Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

16 August: San Roque.

Since 2010 it has hosted the Veladas Poéticas “Poesía en el Camino” (Poetry Evenings “Poetry on the Camino”), which bring together poets, artists and residents every summer for a cultural gathering linked to the Camino de Santiago. These events have featured notable authors and are accompanied by literary workshops, exhibitions and art installations.

Another unique event is the Fiesta Turmoga, held since 2013, which recreates the life of the pre-Roman Turmogi people, evoking their encounter with Rome and the peace pact represented by the hospitality tesserae.

Trails and nature

Olmillos de Sasamón also stands out for its mountain-biking and hiking trails:

La Dehesa mountain-bike route: 36.4 km with 350 m of elevation gain.

Los Negrales mountain-bike route: 25.9 km with 280 m of elevation gain.

Alto de Castarreño trail: 14.5 km with 310 m of elevation gain.

These routes offer views of the grain fields, dehesas (pasturelands) and open landscapes of the Burgos plateau.

Olmillos de Sasamón

Olmillos de Sasamón, right on the Vía Aquitania of the Camino Frances, is a historic and heritage-rich site of enormous importance. From pre-Roman remains to Romanisation, through medieval resettlement, its Jacobean role and monuments such as the Castle of Olmillos and the Church of the Asunción, the village offers travellers a unique experience.

Its festivals, poetry evenings and historical re-enactments keep alive the identity of a village that combines tradition, culture and tourism at the very heart of Castile.

Country

Spain

Province

Province of Burgos

Comarca

Odra Pisuerga

Municipality

Sasamón

Location

42°23′45″N 4°02′06″W

Elevation

815 m

Area

11.16 km²

Population

106 (INE 2024)

Density

9.5 inhab./km²

Demonym

Olmillense

Postal code

09124

Patron saint

Asunción de la Virgen

Website

http://www.olmillosdesasamon.es/

Olmillos de Sasamón Olmillos de Sasamón is a village belonging to the municipality of Sasamón, located in the Burgos region of Odra-Pisuerga, within the autonomous community of Castilla y León.
