Its strategic position attracted Rome’s attention, and during the campaigns against the Cantabrians and Astures (29-19 BC) the camp of the Legio IV Macedonica was set up here under the command of the emperor Augustus.

This settlement gave rise to the city of Segisama Julia, mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary as a principal way-station of the imperial road network. Two key roads set out from here: road XXXIV, Ab Asturica Burdigalam (Vía Aquitania), towards Bordeaux, and road XXXII, Ab Asturica Terracone, towards Tarragona. The first became established as a Jacobean route and still remains in the cultural memory of the road today.

Middle Ages: episcopal see and walled town

In the 11th century, Sancho II of Castile granted Sasamón the rank of episcopal see, its first bishop being Munio (d. 1120). Over time, it came under the diocese of Burgos, but the title “bishop of Burgos and Sasamón” endured as a symbol of its importance.

During the 15th century, the town was walled to reinforce its defensive character. Remains of these walls and access arches still survive today, recalling the medieval splendour of a town that became the administrative and religious centre of the region.

Early Modern and Contemporary Periods

In the 1787 Censo de Floridablanca, Sasamón appears as a crown town within the Partido de Castrojeriz. Its role as a communications hub continued, benefiting from the agricultural wealth of its surroundings.

In 1812, during the Peninsular War, both the church and the town hall were burned by guerrilla fighters after the French withdrawal. This event erased much of its medieval heritage, though over time the town re-established itself with a strong historical identity.

In 2020, the regional government of Castilla y León declared Sasamón a Historic Ensemble, underscoring its heritage significance.

Monumental heritage

Church of Santa María La Real

The Church of Santa María La Real is the town’s most imposing building and the second largest in the province of Burgos after the cathedral. Built in Gothic style, construction began between the 12th and 13th centuries, and it was later expanded with the cloister in the 15th century and the south nave and the San Miguel portico in the 16th.

The church has a three-nave interior covered by ribbed vaults, with altarpieces depicting scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin. Its majesty makes it a landmark of Castilian religious art and an essential stop on the Camino Frances.

Arco de San Miguel de Mazarreros

On the outskirts stands the Arco de San Miguel, the only surviving vestige of the Romanesque church of the abandoned village of Mazarreros, built in the 12th century. This arch symbolises the connection between the vanished settlements and the present-day Jacobean route.

Hermitage of San Isidro and the wayside cross

Near the town stands the Hermitage of San Isidro, beside which stands a 15th-century wayside cross (cruz de humilladero), one of the finest in Spain, carved with scenes of the Passion.

Civil architecture

The town’s layout preserves numerous examples of limestone manor houses, an 18th-century fountain, as well as the Plaza Mayor, overlooked by the town hall. Also notable are two medieval bridges over the Brulles river, recalling Sasamón’s importance as a crossroads.

Casa Museo de Salaguti

On the outskirts stands the Casa Museo de Salaguti, dedicated to the sculptor Carlos Salazar Gutiérrez, known as Salaguti, whose works are found throughout Spain.

Culture and traditions

Sasamón keeps a rich cultural and festive calendar. Among its most renowned products are the highly regarded Sasamón sheep’s cheese and rosquillas castellanas (Castilian ring pastries), a testament to its baking tradition.

The municipality has committed to reviving its traditions, combining cultural activities with the promotion of its historical heritage.

Transport and accessibility

Sasamón lies alongside the A-231 motorway, Camino de Santiago, which ensures its connection with Burgos and León. From the provincial capital it can be reached by car, bus, train or even air via Burgos airport or the nearby airports of Valladolid and Santander.

Regular bus services stop in the town, making it easy for both tourists and pilgrims to arrive.

Demographics and municipal structure of Sasamón

The municipality of Sasamón comprises several settlements: Castrillo de Murcia, Citores del Páramo, Olmillos de Sasamón, Villandiego, Villasidro and Yudego, in addition to the town of Sasamón itself, which has 479 inhabitants. Altogether, the municipal district totals 912 inhabitants.

Heraldic symbols of Sasamón

The coat of arms, approved in 1994, reflects the town’s identity:

In the first quarter, a statue of Caesar on a Corinthian column, with golden wheat ears and a sheep, symbolising agriculture and livestock farming.

In the second quarter, a gold castle on a gules field, evoking its defensive and seigneurial character.
The whole is topped with the Spanish Royal Crown.

Sasamón

Sasamón is a place where more than two thousand years of history converge, from the pre-Roman Segisama Turmoga to the present-day town declared a Historic Ensemble.
