class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Melgar de Fernamental<\/strong>, located on the western edge of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/burgos-province\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"10813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Burgos Province<\/a><\/strong>, in the fertile valley of the <strong>Pisuerga river<\/strong>, <strong>Melgar de Fernamental<\/strong> is one of the most emblematic towns of the <strong>Odra-Pisuerga region<\/strong> and a key enclave on the old <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/via-aquitania\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"8270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">V\u00eda Aquitania<\/a><\/strong>, a Roman road that linked <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/astorga\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11695\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Astorga<\/a> with Bordeaux<\/strong> and which centuries later became part of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"86\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Camino Frances<\/a><\/strong>. Its strategic location between the plains of northern Castile and the border with Palencia made it, since ancient times, a key point of communication, culture and spirituality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Roman origins and the mark of the V\u00eda Aquitania<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The origins of Melgar de Fernamental date back to Roman times, when the city of <strong>Dessobriga<\/strong> stood in its surroundings, one of the most important settlements in the north of the peninsula, located between the present-day municipal boundaries of Melgar, Osornillo and Osorno la Mayor. Several Roman roads ran through this land, among them the <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/via-aquitania\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"8270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">V\u00eda Aquitania<\/a><\/strong> (Ab Asturica Burdigalam)<\/strong>, which linked <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/astorga\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11695\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Astorga<\/a> <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/astorga\/asturica-augusta\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"13548\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Asturica Augusta<\/a>)<\/strong> with <strong>Bordeaux (Burdigala)<\/strong>, passing through <strong>Segisamone (Sasam\u00f3n)<\/strong> and other settlements now integrated into the Camino de Santiago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This route established Melgar as a waypoint between Hispania and Gaul, leaving a legacy that can still be seen today in the <strong>archaeological remains<\/strong>, the <strong>milestones<\/strong> and the route itself, now recovered as part of the <strong>Camino de Santiago V\u00eda Aquitania<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>The medieval repopulation and the lineage of Fern\u00e1n Arment\u00e1lez<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the invasions and the subsequent Castilian repopulation, Melgar re-emerged in the 10th century under the protection of <strong>Count Fern\u00e1n Arment\u00e1lez<\/strong>, a descendant of the counts of Amaya, who granted a founding charter and repopulated the settlement around the year 950. Its name, \u201cMelgar de Fernamental\u201d, derives from this noble founder and from the term \u201cmelgar\u201d, which in pre-Roman language referred to farmland organised into \u201camelgas\u201d or furrows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the following centuries, the town consolidated its urban structure and its importance as an agricultural, livestock and commercial centre. <strong>Count Garc\u00eda Fern\u00e1ndez de Castilla<\/strong> and, later, <strong>Ferdinand III the Saint<\/strong> confirmed the charters granted to the town, ensuring its prosperity and autonomy from other lordships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Manorial era and economic boom<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the Renaissance and the Spanish Golden Age, Melgar experienced a period of splendour. In 1572, <strong>Fernando L\u00f3pez del Campo<\/strong>, a member of Philip II\u2019s Treasury Council, acquired the jurisdictional rights of the town, which enabled the construction of notable buildings and boosted the wool trade with Flanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1612, the town passed into the hands of the <strong>Duke of Lerma<\/strong>, powerful royal favourite of Philip III. The king himself visited Melgar de Fernamental to attend the celebrations held for the taking of possession of the dukedom, one of the most fondly remembered royal visits in the town\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Canal de Castilla<\/strong>, begun in the 18th century, established Melgar as a commercial hub of the first order. This great hydraulic project, a symbol of Enlightenment progress, runs for more than nine kilometres through the municipality, today offering visitors a <strong>greenway<\/strong> perfect for hiking class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Church of Santa Mar\u00eda de la Asunci\u00f3n: art and faith<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town\u2019s most outstanding monument is the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/lo\/church-of-the-assumption-melgar-de-fernamental\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"gd_place\" data-id=\"17068\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Church of the Assumption Melgar de Fernamental<\/a><\/strong>, a monumental church of grand proportions, considered one of the most impressive in northern Castile. Begun in the 14th century with a Latin-cross floor plan and extended in the 16th, it combines <strong>late Gothic, Renaissance and Romanist<\/strong> styles in a perfect balance of sobriety and elegance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its construction was directed by the master stonemason <strong>Juan de Escarza<\/strong>, continued by his son Pedro de Escarza and Pedro de la Torre Bueras. The Neoclassical tower, added in 1749 by the Basque architect <strong>Juan de Sagarvinaga<\/strong>, dominates the Melgar skyline.
