This is a resting stage after the long day into N\u00e1jera: an easy track through vineyards and cereal fields, with no notable climbs. The only downside is the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/la-rioja\/azofra\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Azofra<\/a> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/la-rioja\/ciruena\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ciru\u00e9\u00f1a<\/a><\/strong> stretch (about 9 km) with no reliable services. It is easy and rolling by bike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Santo Domingo de la Calzada and the Saint-Engineer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city owes its name and its very existence to <strong>Santo Domingo Garc\u00eda<\/strong> (11th century), a hermit turned away by the local monasteries, who devoted his life to pilgrims: he cleared the Ayuela forest, paved the <strong>causeway<\/strong> (calzada) that gives the town its name, and built a bridge over the Oja river, a hospital and the church that would later become the cathedral. His work was carried on by <strong>San Juan de Ortega<\/strong>. The town received its charter in 1207 and became one of the route\u2019s great stopping points. Get something to eat in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/la-rioja\/azofra\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Azofra<\/a><\/strong>: there is nothing reliable before Ciru\u00e9\u00f1a (9 km), and the golf-course bar keeps irregular hours.
