class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This stage of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Camino de Santiago Frances<\/a><\/strong> descends from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/provincia-de-burgos\/san-juan-de-ortega\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11337\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Juan de Ortega<\/a><\/strong> to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/provincia-de-burgos\/burgos\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Burgos<\/a><\/strong>, about 26 kilometres that cross the <strong>Sierra de Atapuerca<\/strong> \u2014 home to Europe\u2019s oldest human remains \u2014 and end at the foot The only real climb is the <strong>Sierra de Atapuerca<\/strong>, short and stony. From Orbaneja, the marked route runs through ten kilometres of industrial estates and avenues; the <strong>Arlanz\u00f3n river variant<\/strong>, via Casta\u00f1ares, is far more pleasant and chosen by most pilgrims. By bike, the river route is better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Atapuerca: A Million Years of the Way<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Sierra de Atapuerca<\/strong> holds Europe\u2019s oldest human fossils: <em>Homo antecessor<\/em>, around 800,000 years old, was found at the Gran Dolina site, and hundreds of <em>Homo heidelbergensis<\/em> remains at the Sima de los Huesos. The site is a World Heritage Site, and its finds are displayed at the <strong>Museum of Human Evolution<\/strong> in Burgos. Pilgrims climbing the ridge today walk a natural corridor humans have been crossing for over a million years: the Camino is just its latest layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to See: Monuments and Heritage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Atapuerca archaeological sites<\/strong> (guided tours from the village and from Ibeas de Juarros). In Burgos, the <strong>Cathedral<\/strong>: the tower facade, the dome, the <strong>Papamoscas<\/strong> clock, Diego de Sil\u00f3e\u2019s Golden Staircase, the Constable\u2019s Chapel and the tomb of <strong>El Cid<\/strong> and do\u00f1a Jimena. Also the Arco de Santa Mar\u00eda, the <strong>Monasterio de las Huelgas<\/strong>, the <strong>Cartuja de Miraflores<\/strong>, the Museum of Human Evolution and the castle with its viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Bit of History<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/provincia-de-burgos\/burgos\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Burgos<\/a><\/strong> was founded in 884 and became the seat of the county and later the Kingdom of Castile. It is forever tied to <strong>El Cid<\/strong>, Rodrigo D\u00edaz de Vivar, born nearby in Vivar, exiled by Alfonso VI and the hero of the <em>Cantar de Mio Cid<\/em>. The city reached its peak between the 15th and 16th centuries through the wool trade, which funded much of its heritage. Long before any of that, the Sierra de Atapuerca was already a route for settlers since prehistoric times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gastronom\u00eda<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Burgos-style morcilla<\/strong> with rice is the national benchmark; alongside it, <strong>fresh Burgos cheese<\/strong>, <strong>wood-fired roast lechazo churro<\/strong> lamb, <strong>olla podrida<\/strong> and <strong>Castilian soup<\/strong>. To drink, wines from the <strong>Ribera del Duero<\/strong> and <strong>Arlanza<\/strong>. In the centre, good tapas along Calle San Lorenzo and Calle Sombrerer\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical Tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To enter Burgos, choose the <strong>Arlanz\u00f3n river variant<\/strong>: leave the marked route at Casta\u00f1ares and walk through the riverside park to the cathedral, avoiding the industrial estate. There are bars and fountains in Ag\u00e9s, Atapuerca and Carde\u00f1uela. The Atapuerca ridge climb is short but on loose stone. <strong>Burgos<\/strong> is a good place for a rest day; the municipal hostel, next to the cathedral, is large and modern, but it\u2019s worth booking ahead in season.
