In the village awaits the church of <strong>San Mart\u00edn de Tours<\/strong> (1066), one of the masterpieces of European Romanesque.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Castrojeriz \u2013 Fr\u00f3mista: complete guide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage profile: distance, elevation and difficulty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Distance:<\/strong> 25.4 km. <strong>Walking time:<\/strong> 5 h 15 min \u2013 6 h 15 min. <strong>Elevation:<\/strong> about +200 m and \u2013230 m. <strong>Difficulty:<\/strong> medium. All the hard work comes at the start: the <strong>climb and descent of the Alto de Mostelares<\/strong>, right after leaving Castrojeriz, with gradients of up to 18%. After that, flat meseta as far as the Pisuerga, and after Boadilla, a pleasant, shaded stretch along the <strong>Canal de Castilla<\/strong>. By bike you&#8217;ll need to push up Mostelares; the rest is easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Canal de Castilla: an 18th-century water motorway<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Canal de Castilla<\/strong> was an ambitious Enlightenment-era project: 207 kilometres of navigable canal, begun in 1753, to move Castile&#8217;s wheat to the ports of the north. The railway made it obsolete before it was even finished, but today it&#8217;s a green corridor with locks, aqueducts and towpaths. Pilgrims walk alongside it as far as Fr\u00f3mista, where you see the <strong>four-lock staircase<\/strong> that overcame a steep drop in level. Shortly before, the <strong>Puente de Itero<\/strong> over the Pisuerga recalls the old border between the kingdoms of Castile and Le\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see: monuments and heritage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hermitage of <strong>San Nicol\u00e1s<\/strong> beside the Puente de Itero, with its candlelit Italian-run hostel; the <strong>Gothic rollo (pillory) of <a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/boadilla-del-camino\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boadilla del Camino<\/a><\/strong>; the <strong>four-lock staircase<\/strong> of the Canal de Castilla; and in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/fromista\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11457\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fr\u00f3mista<\/a><\/strong>, the <strong>church of San Mart\u00edn de Tours<\/strong>, pure 1066 Romanesque with almost 300 carved corbels, as well as the churches of San Pedro and Santa Mar\u00eda del Castillo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A little history<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Puente de Itero<\/strong> (or Puente Fitero) marked the border between Castile and Le\u00f3n for centuries and today separates Burgos from Palencia. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/fromista\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11457\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fr\u00f3mista<\/a><\/strong> \u2014from the Latin <em>frumentum<\/em>, \u201cwheat\u201d\u2014 was Castile&#8217;s granary; its church of San Mart\u00edn was commissioned in 1066 by Do\u00f1a Mayor de Castilla, widow of King Sancho Garc\u00e9s III of Navarre, next to a monastery that has since disappeared. An early-20th-century restoration left it looking almost new, making it a textbook example of Romanesque architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food and drink<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cooking from the Palencia Tierra de Campos: <strong>roast lechazo<\/strong>, <strong>menestra<\/strong> (mixed vegetable stew), <strong>Castilian soup<\/strong>, <strong>sheep&#8217;s cheese<\/strong> and <strong>pigeon<\/strong> stews. For dessert, almond <strong>amarguillos<\/strong>. To drink, wines from Cigales and Arlanza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climb the <strong>Alto de Mostelares<\/strong> early, while it&#8217;s cool; the descent is very steep, so take care going down. There are bars and fountains in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/itero-de-la-vega\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11447\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Itero de la Vega<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/boadilla-del-camino\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boadilla del Camino<\/a><\/strong>.
