A flat, short stage on comfortable terrain. Leaving Sahagún you must choose between the marked route (Bercianos – El Burgo Ranero), along a path lined with young trees beside the road, and the Roman Road variant (Calzada del Coto – Calzadilla de los Hermanillos), wilder and with fewer services. Very easy by bike.

Two routes to Mansilla: the tree-lined path and the Roman road

Leaving Sahagún, the Camino splits in two. The official pilgrim path is lined with a double row of young trees that will provide shade in a few decades, though for now it runs monotonously alongside the road. The Calzada de los Peregrinos, or Via Trajana, is a stretch of Roman road that crosses more solitary countryside, passing only through Calzadilla de los Hermanillos, with about 13 km with no services until Reliegos. Both routes meet again near Mansilla de las Mulas.

What to see: monuments and heritage

The Puente Canto over the Cea river as you leave Sahagún; the adobe and rammed-earth architecture of Bercianos and El Burgo Ranero, a humble yet distinctive heritage; the parish hostel of Bercianos del Real Camino; and the stork-filled lagoon at El Burgo Ranero. This is a stage for noticing the small details: dovecotes, wells and nests.

A bit of history

These villages arose as resettlement towns along the Camino in the 11th and 12th centuries: “Bercianos” refers to people who came from El Bierzo, and “El Burgo” to a Frankish settlement founded alongside the route. The Calzada de los Peregrinos is a stretch of the Roman road that linked Bordeaux with Astorga, so well built that pilgrims still walk on it today.

Local food

Leonese cuisine from the Tierra de Campos: cecina (cured beef), roast lechazo (milk-fed lamb), garlic soup, Sahagún leeks, and the frog’s legs that give El Burgo Ranero its name. To drink, wine from the Tierra de León D.O.

Practical tips

An easy stage, good to combine with the next one as far as Mansilla de las Mulas or even León. If you choose the Roman Road variant, keep in mind that between Calzadilla de los Hermanillos and Reliegos there are about 13 km with no services: carry water. On the main route there are bars in Bercianos and El Burgo Ranero, and the parish hostel of Bercianos del Real Camino offers a donation-based communal dinner.

<h3
