Buried beside it is Don El\u00edas Vali\u00f1a, the priest who revived the Camino in the 1980s and invented the yellow arrows.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Villafranca del Bierzo \u2013 O Cebreiro: Complete Guide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage Profile: Distance, Elevation and Difficulty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Distance:<\/strong> 27.8 km. <strong>Walking time:<\/strong> 7h \u2013 8h 30min. <strong>Elevation change:<\/strong> about +900 m and \u2013180 m. <strong>Difficulty:<\/strong> <strong>high<\/strong>. The first 20 km, through the Valcarce valley, are nearly flat and easy. All the effort comes in the last 8 km: the climb from <strong>Las Herrer\u00edas to O Cebreiro<\/strong>, about 700 m of elevation gain, with the stretch from Las Herrer\u00edas to La Faba especially steep and narrow. Highly recommended to <strong>split the stage<\/strong> at Vega de Valcarce or Las Herrer\u00edas. By bike, the final climb is done on the road. From Las Herrer\u00edas, <strong>horse transport<\/strong> is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">O Cebreiro: Pallozas, a Miracle and the Yellow Arrows<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>O Cebreiro<\/strong> preserves several <strong>pallozas<\/strong>, circular stone dwellings with thatched roofs of pre-Roman origin, inhabited until just a few decades ago and today partly a museum. Its church holds the <strong>Holy Miracle<\/strong>: around 1300, during a stormy Mass, a villager climbed the mountain to attend; the priest doubted his faith and, according to tradition, the host turned to flesh and the wine to blood. The chalice and paten \u2014 the \u00abgrail of O Cebreiro\u00bb \u2014 are venerated there. And this is where <strong>Don El\u00edas Vali\u00f1a<\/strong> lived, the parish priest who studied the Camino, wrote its first modern guidebook, and in the 1980s painted the first <strong>yellow arrows<\/strong> with leftover road paint. The <strong>Holy Miracle<\/strong> turned the sanctuary into a pilgrimage site in its own right, and the Catholic Monarchs donated the reliquary that holds the relics.
