The first part, from O Cebreiro to the Alto do Poio, is a rolling ridge walk, exposed to the wind but with magnificent views. From the Poio onward, it’s all downhill: gentle at first, then, from O Biduedo to Triacastela, steeper along sunken lanes among chestnut trees. The ridge is rideable by bike and the final descent has some technical sections.

Triacastela’s Stone for the Cathedral of Santiago

In the Middle Ages, pilgrims who reached Triacastela would pick up a block of limestone from the village quarries and carry it on their shoulders for about 100 kilometers, to the lime kilns of Castañeda, near Arzúa. That lime made the mortar used to build the Cathedral of Santiago. It was a concrete way of taking part in the great work. Triacastela already appears in the 12th-century Codex Calixtinus as a day’s end, and here the Camino splits between the Samos route and the San Xil route.

What to See: Monuments and Heritage

The pilgrim statue at Alto de San Roque; the church of Hospital de la Condesa with its cross of Santiago; the pallozas of Liñares and Fonfría; the tiny chapel of San Pedro in O Biduedo; and the sunken lanes and centuries-old chestnut trees on the descent to Triacastela.

A Bit of History

The pilgrim hospitals of the mountains — O Cebreiro, Hospital da Condesa, Alto do Poio — were vital shelters for centuries on a high, snowbound pass. Triacastela had a hospital, a jail for pilgrims, and the quarries that supplied, stone by stone, the building of the Compostela cathedral.

Food and Drink

Galician mountain cooking: caldo gallego, lacón con grelos, empanada, queixo do Cebreiro and honey and chestnuts from the Sierra de O Courel. The pilgrim’s menu is already the norm here, with mencia wine from the Ribeira Sacra.

Practical Tips

If it’s a windy, foggy day, dress warmly for the ridge as far as the Alto do Poio; the weather usually improves once you start descending. There are bars in almost every village, so you don’t need to carry food. In Triacastela there are several hostels; decide here whether tomorrow you’ll go via Samos (longer, with the monastery) or via San Xil (shorter and more rural). It’s a short stage: if you have energy to spare you can carry on to Sarria.

Services and Accommodation by Town

<p
