This six-month adventure has captured the attention of many, standing out for its spiritual depth and the lessons Paul has learned along the way.

An Unusual Start From Troyes to Lalin: The First Steps

On 14 January, Paul set out from his farm near Troyes, France. Yesterday, his arrival in Lalin drew the attention of many curious neighbours. Along the way, he has crossed picturesque landscapes and met all kinds of people who have enriched his experience.

Initial Goal: Santiago Cathedral

Paul hopes to reach the majestic Santiago Cathedral this Saturday, where he will be reunited with his Belgian girlfriend, whom he met during his pilgrimage and hasn’t seen since Ponferrada. However, his journey won’t end there; he plans to walk home to France, continuing his pilgrimage for another six months.

The Spiritual Motivation Behind the Journey, Beyond Religion

Paul’s reason for setting out on this journey isn’t merely religious, but spiritual. He wanted to walk it alone to find himself and connect deeply with the world around him. He wasn’t looking for specific answers, but for meaningful experiences and connections.

Encountering Unconditional Love

Paul seeks to live and experience unconditional love. He criticises how the media and advertising focus on superficial matters, drifting away from the true essence of love. For him, this love shows itself in small everyday details and in genuine interactions with others.

Memorable Encounters Along the Way

Sophie’s Hospitality

During his journey, Paul has witnessed the generosity and kindness of many people. Sophie, a woman who took him in for two weeks in France to care for his sick dog, is a notable example of this hospitality.

A Helping Hand in Torres del Rio

In Logrono, a woman from Torres del Rio offered Paul shelter after helping save his dog. These acts of kindness have left a deep mark on him, reaffirming his faith in humanity.

Reflections on the Pilgrimage

Shedding the Superfluous

For Paul, the pilgrimage is an opportunity to shed the things modern society considers essential but that, in truth, aren’t. The Camino invites solitude and peace, allowing moments of reflection and introspection.

A Preference for the Camino de Invierno

Although Paul began his journey on the popular Camino Frances, he soon changed course at Ponferrada onto the Camino de Invierno (Winter Way). He prefers this less-travelled route, where he feels more connected to the authentic essence of the pilgrimage, away from the commercialisation of the Camino Frances.

The Meaning of the Camino Beyond the Final Destination

For Paul, the true meaning of the Camino de Santiago doesn’t lie in reaching the Santiago Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, but in the experiences and lessons gained along the way. Every encounter and every step taken are an essential part of this spiritual journey.

In Search of a Greater Purpose

Paul observes that many people are looking for something bigger and more meaningful than what the modern world offers. He believes we live in a world in crisis, where traditional religions are losing their influence. His pilgrimage is a search for unconditional love and a deeper connection with humanity.

Paul Horiot, His Donkey and His Dog Have Been on Pilgrimage for Six Months

Paul Horiot‘s journey on the Camino de Santiago is an inspiring testament to spiritual searching and unconditional love.
