In this article, we follow Jhonatan Barrios on his journey through stage 18 of the Camino Frances, from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/ledigos\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11506\">Ledigos<\/a><\/strong> to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/bercianos-del-real-camino\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11565\">Bercianos del Real Camino<\/a><\/strong>, a day full of breathtaking scenery, rich history and unforgettable experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Leaving Ledigos: The Start of the Stage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">A New Day on the Camino Frances<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 7:10am, Jhonatan Barrios leaves the hostel in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/ledigos\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11506\">Ledigos<\/a><\/strong>, ready to take on a special stage of his pilgrimage. The day promises to be long, with 25 kilometres to cover, 10 more than originally planned. The day&#8217;s route, which starts in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/ledigos\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11506\">Ledigos<\/a><\/strong> and was meant to end in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/sahagun\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11537\">Sahag\u00fan<\/a><\/strong>, extends onward to Bercianos del Real Camino, a small village a few kilometres further on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jhonatan, like many other <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/pilgrims\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"5880\">peregrinos<\/a><\/strong>, has decided to get ahead on part of the next stage to make the most of the good weather and the morning&#8217;s energy. The sun is just beginning to appear on the horizon, and the road awaits him, promising discoveries and moments of reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">From Ledigos to Terradillos de los Templarios<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first stretch of the day takes Jhonatan through <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/terradillos-de-los-templarios\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11514\">Terradillos de los Templarios<\/a><\/strong>, a small village steeped in history. This place, known for its brick and adobe buildings, was once a stronghold of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/order-of-the-temple\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"7171\">Orden del Temple<\/a><\/strong>, one of the most influential military orders of the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/terradillos-de-los-templarios\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11514\">Terradillos de los Templarios<\/a><\/strong> is not just a curious name; it reflects its glorious past. Local legend has it that the last Templars who lived here buried a hen that laid golden eggs atop a nearby hill. Although Jhonatan knows it is just a story, he cannot help feeling a connection to the mysteries of the place as he walks through its streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Sahag\u00fan: The Heart of the Camino<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Arrival in Sahag\u00fan<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After leaving <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/terradillos-de-los-templarios\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11514\">Terradillos de los Templarios<\/a><\/strong> and crossing some open fields, Jhonatan reaches <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/sahagun\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11537\">Sahag\u00fan<\/a><\/strong>, an important landmark on the Camino Frances. This town, located in the province of Le\u00f3n, is known as the link between the Camino de Madrid and the Camino Frances. Sahag\u00fan&#8217;s history is rich and varied, marked by the discovery of the relics of the brothers Facundo and Primitivo in the 9th century, and the arrival of the Order of Cluny in the 11th century, which cemented its importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/sahagun\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11537\">Sahag\u00fan<\/a><\/strong>, pilgrims can obtain the &#8220;<strong>Carta Peregrina<\/strong>&#8220;, a certificate marking that they have reached the halfway point of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/\">Camino Frances<\/a><\/strong>. Jhonatan does not miss the chance to stop for breakfast and stamp his credential at the <strong>Cluny municipal hostel<\/strong>, an old building that has been carefully renovated to welcome travellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Exploring Sahag\u00fan<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/sahagun\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11537\">Sahag\u00fan<\/a><\/strong> is not Jhonatan&#8217;s final destination on this stage, he decides to explore the town a little more before continuing on his way. The ruins of old monasteries and the Romanesque churches remind him of the spiritual and cultural power this town once held. Every corner of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/sahagun\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11537\">Sahag\u00fan<\/a><\/strong> seems to tell a story, from the old cobbled streets to the walls covered in symbols of the Camino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jhonatan takes a close look at a mural on one of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/sahagun\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11537\">Sahag\u00fan<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s building facades. The mural depicts a scallop shell, an iconic symbol of the Camino de Santiago, which pilgrims carry as a talisman and guide. This artistic depiction reminds him of the shell he himself carries on his backpack, a symbol of his commitment to the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Towards Bercianos del Real Camino<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">San Nicol\u00e1s del Real Camino: The Last Stop in Palencia<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After setting off again, Jhonatan continues on towards <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/san-nicolas-del-real-camino\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11526\">San Nicol\u00e1s del Real Camino<\/a><\/strong>, the last town in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/palencia-province\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"5597\">Province of Palencia<\/a><\/strong> before entering the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"6006\">Province of Le\u00f3n<\/a><\/strong>. This small village is known for its 12th-century pilgrim hospital, once run by the Order of Saint Augustine and dedicated to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/saints\/saint-nicholas-of-trani\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"8672\">Saint Nicholas<\/a><\/strong>, hence the village&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hospital, now in ruins, was a place where pilgrims and lepers received care on their journey towards <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/a-coruna-province\/santiago-de-compostela\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"12306\">Santiago de Compostela<\/a><\/strong>. Although the hospital no longer exists, the history and legacy of the place live on among the residents and the pilgrims who pass through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Crossing the Border into Le\u00f3n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With tired feet but a lifted spirit, Jhonatan crosses the symbolic border between Palencia and Le\u00f3n. The landscape begins to change slightly, with wider fields and villages that seem more isolated. However, the essence of the Camino remains the same: a journey inward as much as a physical one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sun, which has been with Jhonatan all day, begins to slowly sink, casting long shadows over the road. As he presses on, the sound of his footsteps on the gravel mingles with the soft whisper of the wind through the fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Arrival in Bercianos del Real Camino<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, after several hours of walking, Jhonatan reaches <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/bercianos-del-real-camino\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11565\">Bercianos del Real Camino<\/a><\/strong>. This small village, located a few kilometres before <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/el-burgo-ranero\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11570\">El Burgo Ranero<\/a><\/strong>, is the end of his extended stage today. Despite his tiredness, Jhonatan feels fulfilled. He has covered more ground than planned, explored new stories, and strengthened his connection with the Camino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caminodesantiagofrances.com\/en\/leon-province\/bercianos-del-real-camino\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11565\">Bercianos del Real Camino<\/a><\/strong> is a quiet place, with few houses and an atmosphere that invites rest and reflection. Jhonatan finds a cosy hostel to spend the night.
