This challenge not only tests the participants’ endurance and spirit, but also aims to raise visibility around crucial issues related to mental health and suicide prevention. What makes this challenge unique is that it is undertaken alongside Javier, a blind participant who is helped by his guide dog, Xudan.

Why Is This Challenge Special?

What makes this challenge truly special is the combination of physical achievement and a charitable cause. Throughout the journey, participants will not only be facing a physical challenge, but will also be contributing to a greater cause: raising awareness and preventing suicide. Javier’s participation, who is blind and accompanied by his guide dog, adds a moving dimension to the challenge, showing that determination and solidarity know no limits.

Goal of the Let’s Talk About the Camino Challenge

The main goal of the “Let’s Talk About the Camino” challenge is to raise funds for the Asociación Hablemos de Ávila, a non-profit organisation dedicated to suicide prevention and to supporting families going through silent grief after a loss. The Asociación Hablemos has been working since 2021 to offer resources, emotional support and training on mental health issues.

Raising Awareness of Suicide and Mental Health

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with around 800,000 cases a year according to the World Health Organization. Raising awareness of the problem and highlighting the importance of mental health are essential to preventing these tragedies. Through this challenge, the aim is not only to raise funds but also to educate society and raise awareness of the need for support and prevention in the field of mental health.

The Camino Challenge: Details and Preparations

Route and Stages of the “Let’s Talk About the Camino” Solidarity Challenge

The challenge involves covering the 750 kilometres of the Camino de Santiago Frances in just 16 days, which means an average of around 50 kilometres a day. This route is famous for its beauty and for being a historic pilgrimage, but it is also known for its physical and emotional demands.

The Camino de Santiago Frances

The Camino de Santiago Frances is one of the most traditional and well-travelled routes of the Camino de Santiago. It begins in Roncesvalles, Spain, and crosses northern Spain before reaching Santiago de Compostela. Along the way, pilgrims enjoy varied landscapes, from mountains to open fields, and pass through numerous towns rich in history and culture.

Special Challenges: Walking Alongside Javier

Javier, the challenge’s blind participant, is accompanied by his guide dog, Xudan, and by Miguel, who acts as his guide. This dynamic adds a level of complexity to the challenge, as additional logistical aspects must be coordinated to ensure Javier’s safety and wellbeing. The use of aids such as a two-way guide bar and other essential equipment will be crucial to the challenge’s success.

How to Take Part and Contribute

Registration and Buying a T-Shirt

Since not everyone can join the challenge in person, an alternative way to take part has been arranged: buying a challenge t-shirt. This t-shirt not only serves as registration, but also helps raise visibility for the cause. Participants can buy the t-shirt and wear it on their own walks or activities to show their support for the Asociación Hablemos.

Registration Details

Registration for the challenge is done through the event’s official website. By buying the t-shirt, participants are contributing to the challenge’s goal and helping fund the activities of the Asociación Hablemos. The t-shirt becomes a symbol of commitment to the cause and a tool for raising awareness about mental health.

Voluntary Contribution

In addition to registering, you can also contribute through direct voluntary donations. Those interested can make a donation to the Asociación Hablemos account, including “Reto Hablemos en el Camino” in the reference. This contribution will help cover the costs of the association’s prevention and support activities.

CC: ES06 3016 1083 49 2381237029

The Asociación Hablemos: An Organisation with a Vital Mission

History and Goals

The Asociación Hablemos was founded in 2021 in Ávila with the goal of preventing suicide and offering support to families affected by the loss of a loved one. The organisation carries out a range of key actions, including support groups, agreements with public institutions and the publication of guides on suicide prevention.

Activities and Projects

Among the Asociación Hablemos’s key activities are organising support groups for people in grief and promoting mental health through educational programmes. The association is also working on the creation of a National Suicide Prevention Plan and on raising public awareness of the importance of mental health.

Impact of the Challenge: What Do We Hope to Achieve?

Awareness and Education

One of the main goals of the challenge is to increase awareness and education about suicide and mental health. By bringing together people from different parts of the world around a common cause, the aim is to generate a positive impact on public perception of these issues. The challenge’s visibility also helps remove the stigma associated with suicide and encourage an open dialogue about mental health.

Fundraising

Fundraising is another key part of the challenge. All the money raised through registrations and contributions will be donated in full to the Asociación Hablemos. These funds will allow the association to continue its activities and offer support to those who need it most.

Connection and Community Support

The challenge also aims to foster connection and community support. By involving people from different places, a support network is created that contributes to the cause of suicide prevention. Taking part in the challenge, whether as a walker, contributor or donor, strengthens the sense of community and solidarity around such an important issue.

A Challenge with a Greater Purpose

The “Let’s Talk About the Camino” challenge is much more than a simple walk; it is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Through this challenge, the aim is not only to walk the Camino de Santiago in record time, but also to raise awareness and support for suicide prevention.

Every step taken on the Camino, every t-shirt bought and every contribution made helps towards a greater goal: raising awareness of and support for mental health. By joining this challenge, whether by walking, contributing or donating, you are becoming part of a collective effort to create a positive and lasting impact. Together, we can walk towards a more aware and supportive future, where everyone’s mental health and wellbeing are a priority.

Buen Camino, pilgrim!

Camino de Santiago Frances

Solidarity Challenge “Let’s Talk About the Camino”: An Adventure with a Purpose The solidarity challenge “Let’s Talk About the Camino” is an exciting initiative that combines adventure and solidarity in a demanding journey with a deeply meaningful purpose.
