Originally owned by the Monastery of Saint Zoilus in Carrión de los Condes, it served a parish function until the mid-17th century, when the local parishes were merged into the Church of Santa María la Blanca. The building has a single nave with a straight apse, built in ashlar stone at its base and completed with brick and adobe. Notable features include its main portal bearing the coat of arms of the keys of San Pedro, a carved ashlar on its rear wall, and a decorated coffered ceiling inside. Throughout its history, it has served as a town hall and a school, reflecting its importance in community life.

<div de Santiago has acquired the church with the aim of turning it into a pilgrims’ hostel and a world-class study centre. This project aims to preserve the historic heritage and offer a space for welcoming and training pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. The initiative is expected to be presented at the next International Tourism Fair, seeking funding and international collaboration.

Integration Into the Network of Cluniac Sites

San Pedro de Villalcázar de Sirga is part of the Cluniac Sites, a network bringing together places with a heritage tied to the Order of Cluny in Europe. This inclusion highlights the church’s importance in monastic history and its connection with other Cluniac sites in Castilla y León, such as San Zoilo de Carrión and San Martín de Frómista.

Cultural and Tourism Impact

The restoration of San Pedro will contribute to the cultural and tourism development of Villalcázar de Sirga and its surrounding area. By offering accommodation and training to pilgrims, the local economy will be strengthened and awareness of the Cluniac heritage will be promoted. The project is also expected to boost the bid for the Cluniac Sites to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Transforming the Church of San Pedro in Villalcázar de Sirga

The transformation of the church of San Pedro into a hostel and study centre represents a unique opportunity to preserve the historic and spiritual legacy of the Camino de Santiago Frances.
