Christopher James Brown

Instagram: christopherjamesbrown

Versione inglese

Six Weeks Walking the Camino de Santiago with My Mother

The Journey That Changed Us Forever: Chronicles of a Shared Camino de Santiago

In 2024, I had the opportunity to thru hike the Appalachian Trail, a 2,200 mile hike from Georgia to Maine along the Appalachian Mountains. It was the greatest thing I had accomplished in my life and changed my life forever. During the hike, I heard talk of more thru hikes and the camino got brought up frequently. My friend, Lauren, asked me if I wanted to hike it with her in October of 2024 after completing the Appalachian Trail and I told her that I was going to ask my mom to hike it with me. On January 24th at 9pm, my mom was visiting Utah and we were all at my grandma’s house and I asked her if she would hike the Camino de Santiago with me. She immediately said yes without knowing what she was committing to. So we started researching and that night we watched the movie, “The Way” with Martin Sheen. It was amazing, we were determined and set on it from that point forward.

We planned and started booking flights and lodging, and figuring out a plan on how to meet, what our gear would be, which route we would do, how many days, and all of the logistics in between. My childhood friend had invited me to his destination wedding in Lake Como, Italy in August and I told my mom I already had a flight in August so let’s start September 1st and do the most common route, the 6 week Camino Frances or French route from St Jean Pied De Port to Finsiterre, the end of the earth. It would be over 500 miles and between 35 and 40 days. We got our gear purchased and loaded up and 8 months later we met at a plaza in Pamplona Spain. The excitement was unmatched, we were living a movie. My mom would tell everyone, I am not a hiker but when your 31 year old son asks you to spend 6 weeks with him, it doesn’t matter what you are doing, you say yes. Many people do not get this opportunity to spend this much time together. My mom had recently retired so she had the time and was available. I had finished a summer in Alaska fishing for salmon and September was the perfect time in between seasonal work.

My mom was so nervous as this was out of her comfort zone, and I was over confident having just done a hike 4 times as long and more untamed in the mountains. We met in between and had talked everything through about expectations, resting, breaks, distances and our limits. Both of us could not contain the energy and stoke we had for this quest we were about to begin. Going into it, I had a vision and made goals, including creating unforgettable memories with my mom and sealing our relationship, in addition to seeking a spiritual experience and creating lasting friendships and connections with people around the world. This is exactly what happened.

Throughout the journey, I wrote down 180 people’s names on my special hiking staff that was gifted to me from a business owner in one of the small towns we passed through. The 180 people were from 35 different countries and we had a unique story with each one of them. I consider every single one of them part of my camino family and connected in ways that you don;t normally do in daily life in society. The camino was something different. Many said that the Camino was God’s way of how humans are to interact with each other. No separation of classes and money or professions, all on the same path of life, reaching towards the same goal without contention and first world problems. The people we met along the way were outstanding. I cried with certain people, we heard the most inspiring stories to the most heartbreaking stories and everything in between. Everyone had similar yet unique reasons for being on the Camino.

My mom and I always stuck together, we would often get into conversations with other people and groups along the way but we rarely if ever were not within sight of each other. We both valued our time together and knew how soon it would be over so we spent every second together that we could. We got into deep conversations, about life, family, things that we had never talked about before. Things we had never imagined or thought about before. It was a spiritual cleansing for both of us to discover ourselves in ways we hadn’t seen before, as well as overcome obstacles and things inhibiting our own happiness. It was truly life changing and looking back we knew we would never be the same.

The weather was incredible for us, but if it rained, we were smiling twice as big, this did not dampen our happiness. Whether it was early or late, cloudy or sunny, busy or empty, we enjoyed every minute of the Camino. There were some experiences that felt heavenly, such as the rain storm headed up to the summit of Foncebadon, the climb to O Cebreiro as the bagpipes were played on the ridge, the flora and fauna crossing the pyrenees, the sunrises and sunsets, the first time we saw the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela from the Monte de Gozo. Every day I wanted to express my gratitude to God for this beautiful earth. We found beauty where others didn’t. In every town, every cathedral, the meseta, the hills, the forest, the streets, it was all beautiful to us.

We always had the goal of reaching Finisterre, the end of the earth, a 90 km walk past Santiago de Compostela, so we thought Santiago would just be a milestone along our journey and not our destination, we put emphasis on enjoying the voyage, and not waiting to express emotions and gratitude at the end, but each and every day. We did not think we would be dramatic and cry when we arrived to Santiago, but that was not the case. The morning of September 30th as we walked down the ancient steps leading into the plaza, the center of the Camino de Santiago, our emotions broke out. We had finally made it. We did it. We did what we said we were going to do 8 months ago. My mom had accomplished something she thought was previously impossible to her physically. We hugged, cried, laughed, and could not believe how amazing we felt having finished something so remarkable.

As we left Santiago, we still felt hungry for finishing a journey to Finsiterre, our true destination where you can walk no further, where the sun sets to die, where land meets the ocean. Those last 4 days were so special to me and were so good for us to receive closure and realize and swallow what we had just done. They were also some of the prettiest days through lush forests filled with ferns and trees and entering into the coastal Galicia, we again felt exalted, humbled, and grateful for an opportunity of a lifetime. The day we arrived to Finisterre, was a dream come true, we took our time and the first time we saw the ocean adn first time we saw the lighthouse at the end of the world, it again felt like time paused and the world around us all focused on that one thing we had been walking towards this whole time.

The Camino changed us forever. The things of this world that stress society out no longer have a place or time for us, we are truly at peace. I have come to know that the true meaning to life is to experience joy. That joy for me comes through God’s children and God’s creation. The interactions we had between other pilgrims and people along the way made the Camino what it is. The raw, untamed nature connected us to the earth. But most importantly, I got to spend time with the most important person in my life, my mom. We are forever bonded thanks to the Camino, and those experiences we shared together will forever live on through the pictures and videos we captured, and the feelings and energy we felt along the path.
