Moratinos is located in the western part of the province of Palencia, on the border with León, just a few kilometers from Sahagún. It lies 67 km from the provincial capital, accessible via the CL-613 and P-973 roads. The A-231 motorway (León-Burgos), known as the Camino de Santiago Motorway, passes north of the municipality, connecting it to major urban centers.

Historical and Cultural Heritage of Moratinos

Church of Santo Tomás de Aquino

The Church of Santo Tomás de Aquino, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, is the main religious landmark in Moratinos. Built of brick, it houses altarpieces from different periods and a 16th-century image of the Virgin and Child in the sacristy. Its tower stands out on the village skyline, serving as a landmark for pilgrims.

San Nicolás del Real Camino

A hamlet of Moratinos, San Nicolás del Real Camino holds notable historical significance. In 1183, Alfonso VIII granted the church of San Miguel de Moral de la Reina to the Knights Templar, who founded a hospital in the area. From 1554, Dominican nuns ran this hospital, cementing the site’s importance along the pilgrim route.

Underground Wine Cellars: Castile’s “Hobbiton”

One of the most distinctive features of Moratinos is its cluster of cellars dug into a hillside, popularly known as “the castle of Moratinos” or “Hobbiton“. These traditional structures, historically used for making and storing wine, form a unique landscape reminiscent of a fantasy setting. Strolling through this wine-cellar quarter is an experience that transports visitors back in time.

Moratinos celebrates its patron saint festival in honor of Santo Tomás on August 20th. These festivities give residents and visitors the chance to enjoy cultural, religious, and recreational activities that strengthen the municipality’s social fabric.
