The province of León represents one of the most emblematic stages of the Camino Frances, offering pilgrims a unique combination of historical heritage, cultural richness, and natural landscapes. This stretch, which runs from Sahagún to La Laguna de Castilla, is a journey full of history, art, and spirituality.

Stages of the Camino Frances in the Province of León

Stage 1: Sahagún – El Burgo Ranero (18 km)

From Sahagún, known for its Mudéjar heritage, the Camino continues on to El Burgo Ranero. This stretch crosses the Tierra de Campos, characterized by its vast plains and agricultural landscapes.

Stage 2: El Burgo Ranero – Mansilla de las Mulas (26 km)

Continuing along straight, flat paths, pilgrims pass through towns such as Reliegos, before reaching Mansilla de las Mulas, a walled town with a rich medieval legacy.

Stage 3: Mansilla de las Mulas – León (18.5 km)

This stage leads pilgrims to the city of León, where notable monuments include the Gothic Cathedral and the Basilica of San Isidoro. The route combines rural stretches with the entrance into the urban setting.

Stage 4: León – Villadangos del Páramo (21.7 km)

Leaving León, the Camino heads into the León Páramo, passing through small villages and offering views of open fields until reaching Villadangos del Páramo.

Stage 5: Villadangos del Páramo – Astorga (28.5 km)

This stretch takes pilgrims through villages such as San Martín del Camino and Hospital de Órbigo, known for its medieval bridge, before arriving at Astorga, a city with a notable Roman heritage and the Episcopal Palace designed by Gaudí.

Stage 6: Astorga – Rabanal del Camino (20.6 km)

From Astorga, the Camino climbs into the mountains, passing through towns such as Murias de Rechivaldo and El Ganso, until reaching Rabanal del Camino, a picturesque mountain village.

Stage 7: Rabanal del Camino – Ponferrada (32.7 km)

This stage is one of the most demanding, crossing the Cruz de Ferro, the highest point of the Camino Frances, and descending through villages such as El Acebo and Molinaseca until reaching Ponferrada, with its impressive Templar castle.

Stage 8: Ponferrada – Villafranca del Bierzo (23.2 km)

The Camino crosses the fertile Bierzo valley, passing through towns such as Cacabelos, before arriving at Villafranca del Bierzo, known for its architecture and the Church of Santiago Apóstol.

Stage 9: Villafranca del Bierzo – O Cebreiro (27.5 km)

In this stage, pilgrims head into the mountains, passing through villages such as Vega de Valcarce and La Faba, La Laguna, the last town in León before entering Galicia. The stage ends in O Cebreiro.
