Santa Engracia – Engracia de Zaragoza
Engracia de Zaragoza was a Hispano-Roman martyr saint.
Biography and Martyrdom of Santa Engracia
She died a victim of the persecution decreed by Diocletian in 303 AD. She was being sent to Roussillon to marry a wealthy nobleman there, accompanied by her uncle Lupercio, seventeen noblemen and a servant named Julia. She was passing through Zaragoza when the persecution of Christians began. She interceded for the Christians before the Roman courts, making herself liable to torture.
Her flesh was torn with hooks, one of her breasts was cut off, and a nail was driven into her head.
Her remains are preserved in the basilica church of Santa Engracia in Zaragoza.
