What is there in Valverde de la Virgen

Valverde de la Virgen is the village that gives its name to its municipality, in Leon Province, on the Camino Frances.

Until 1916 it was called Valverde del Camino, a name that said a lot about its link with the route; that year, to avoid duplication with the town in Huelva, it was changed to the present one, in honour of the neighbouring sanctuary. The municipality, which brings together seven settlements and almost eight thousand inhabitants, belonged to the old Brotherhood of Valdoncina. For pilgrims following the roadside option, Valverde is a village to pass through, without great monuments, where services and shade are welcome before continuing across the León moorland. It is a good moment for a breather: the path runs parallel to the N-120, flat and somewhat monotonous, and reaches San Miguel del Camino in a couple of kilometres.

Valverde on the Camino

The municipality, with just over 7,000 inhabitants and 11 km from León, includes La Virgen del Camino and the village of Valverde, which the main variant of the Camino crosses beside the road, with a hostel and services for pilgrims. Spanish military aviation was born in La Virgen del Camino, leaving the airport and the air base here.

Geography

It lies on the upland, at about 880 metres above sea level, beside the Raposeras and Oncina streams. Summers are dry and winters cold.

History

The municipality was formed in the 19th century with the reorganisation of the town councils between the Órbigo and the Bernesga. Its name honours the Virgen del Camino, the sanctuary that is its main landmark.

Religious heritage

The sanctuary of the Virgen del Camino, patroness of the León Region, is the great centre of devotion of the municipality and of the whole province.

Festivities

The San Froilán pilgrimage, in October, fills the sanctuary with people from León. Valverde also celebrates San Vicente, in January, and Santa Engracia, in April.

Economy

In La Virgen del Camino are León airport and the Air Force Basic Academy, which together with several industrial estates provide work for much of the municipality.
