Geography and Climate of Valverde de la Virgen
Located at the confluence of the Raposeras and Oncina streams, a tributary of the río Esla, Valverde de la Virgen has an oceanic Mediterranean climate (Csb according to Köppen). Summers are warm and dry, while winters are cold and partly cloudy.
History of Valverde de la Virgen
The municipality was created in the mid-19th century as a result of an administrative reorganisation that affected the town councils between the ríos Órbigo and Bernesga. Until 1916, it was called Valverde del Camino, changing its name to Valverde de la Virgen in honour of the Virgen del Camino.
Religious Heritage of Valverde de la Virgen
The Sanctuary of the Virgen del Camino, declared patroness of the León region in 1914, is a pilgrimage centre of great importance. In 1917, Pope Benedict XV authorised the canonical coronation of the image, consolidating its spiritual significance.
Festivities of Valverde de la Virgen
Valverde de la Virgen celebrates numerous festivities, most notably the romería of San Froilán, which brings together thousands of pilgrims at the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Camino. Festivities are also held in honour of San Vicente (22 January) and Santa Engracia (16 April).
