History of San Nicolás del Real Camino
The name San Nicolás del Real Camino reflects its close ties to the Way of St. James. In 1183, King Alfonso VIII granted this town to the Order of the Temple, possibly with the intention of establishing a hospital for pilgrims, an initiative attributed to Don Tello Pérez de Meneses. Later, in 1554, Dominican nuns took over the running of this hospital, which remained in operation until its disappearance.
Church of San Nicolás Obispo
The town’s main monument is the Church of San Nicolás Obispo, built in the 13th century of brick with a single nave covered by a barrel vault. Inside, it features a Baroque high altarpiece, along with carvings of the Virgen del Rosario, San Roque and San Nicolás himself
San Nicolás on the Camino de Santiago
San Nicolás del Real Camino is the last town of the Camino Frances in the Provincia de Palencia before entering the Provincia de León. It lies 373 kilometres from Santiago de Compostela, marking the midpoint of the Camino from Roncesvalles.
Pilgrims’ Hospital
In the 12th century, a hospital for pilgrims and lepers was established in the town, known as “Petit Chavalier”, run by the Order of Saint Augustine. This hospital, which could take in up to 13 patients, was dedicated to San Nicolás and was later run by Dominican nuns.

The town has a bar-restaurant at the hostel, medical assistance on Wednesdays and Fridays, and a mobile bakery. However, it has no cash machine, pharmacy or grocery shop.
