What is there in Arzúa

Arzúa is a town and municipality, head of its district, in A Coruna Province, on the Camino Frances.

In Arzúa the Camino Frances meets the Camino del Norte, arriving from Sobrado dos Monxes, and from here everyone shares the last kilometres: you can tell from the streets, always full of rucksacks. In the Middle Ages it was called Vilanova, the new town, and it grew thanks to pilgrim traffic; from that period comes the chapel of A Madalena, linked to an old Augustinian convent that took pilgrims in, a few steps from the church of Santiago. But if Arzúa is known for anything, it is its cheese: it is the capital of the Arzúa-Ulloa designation of origin, a mild, creamy cow’s milk cheese that stars every first weekend of March at the Festa do Queixo. With about six thousand inhabitants and every service, it is a classic stage end, about 40 kilometres from Santiago.

The star product is Arzua-Ulloa Cheese, creamy and mild, one of the great Galician cheeses.

On the first Sunday of March, since 1976, the Festa do Queixo, the cheese festival, is held, with tastings, a competition, music and thousands of visitors.

From Arzúa to O Pedrouzo

  • The stage to O Pedrouzo is about 19 km long, of medium difficulty, among eucalyptus woods and hamlets.
  • You leave along Rúa do Carmen, and the Camino goes down to Ribadiso before climbing again among meadows and woods.
  • There are hostels along the way, such as those of Santa Irene or A Rúa, to split it in two.

In short

Arzúa is the last big stop on the Camino Frances before reaching the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela: good cheese, good services and the meeting with pilgrims from the Camino del Norte.
