Arzúa is a municipality located in the Provincia A Coruña, in the heart of Galicia. Strategically located about 39 km from Santiago de Compostela, Arzúa represents the last major stop on the Camino Frances before reaching the final destination. Two important Jacobean routes converge here: the Camino Frances and the Camino del Norte, making the town a true crossroads for thousands of pilgrims
It calls itself “cheese country“, a nod to the cheese made from cow’s milk under the Arzúa-Ulloa designation of origin.

Arzúa is known as the birthplace of a famous cheese with its own designation of origin called Queso Arzúa-Ulloa, considered one of the most representative and highly valued cheeses in the region of Galicia. This cheese stands out for its unique flavour and creamy texture, which has made it very popular among both locals and visitors to the area. The tradition of making this cheese goes back generations, and today special care is taken to ensure the quality and flavour that define it are preserved.
Every first Sunday of March, since 1976, a special event called the ‘Cheese Festival‘ has been held, officially known in Galician as “Festa do Queixo“. During this festival, the community comes together to pay tribute to this significant product. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including cheese tastings, demonstrations of how it is made, and traditional music and dancing. The festival attracts not only cheese lovers but also many people interested in Galician culture in general. It is a day full of joy and celebration where everyone can enjoy the region’s gastronomy and learn more about the tradition of producing this delicious cheese.
Arzúa–O Pedrouzo Stage: a key stretch of the Camino Frances
- Length: 19 km, with medium difficulty and an estimated time of 4 h 30 min.
- Starting from the Plaza Mayor, following Rua Cima do Lugar towards Ribadiso, passing fountains, chapels and woodland typical of the Camino
- Several hostels along the way: Santa Irene, Porta de Santiago, O Burgo… perfect if you prefer to split the stage into two days
