What is there in Camponaraya

Camponaraya is a town and municipality in the El Bierzo district, in Leon Province, on the Camino Frances.

Its compound name has an explanation: in the 15th century two neighbouring hamlets, Campo and Naraya, joined together, and today they form a long village of more than four thousand people that the Camino crosses from end to end along the old road. In the Middle Ages it had two hospitals, La Soledad and San Juan de Jabero, where pilgrims received what they needed to carry on. Today its hallmark is wine: on the way out of the village, right on the Camino, is the headquarters of Viñas del Bierzo, the district’s first wine cooperative and one of its largest grape producers, where many stop to get to know the mencía variety. Then the route heads through vineyards, gentle hills and some orchards towards Cacabelos.

Distances from Camponaraya

From Camponaraya to Cacabelos it is about 6 km.

To Pieros it is about 8 km.

And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 196.6 km remain.

The municipality

Camponaraya covers 29 km² in the centre of El Bierzo, at 490 metres above sea level, on flat land that has made its industrial estate and its transport links easier. It has about 4,100 inhabitants.

History

The name joins two medieval villages, Campo and Naraya, recorded from the 10th century and resettled by the kings of León. For centuries they depended on the powerful monastery of Santa María de Carracedo.

Over time the two settlements merged into a single village, crossed by the Camino Frances, which had two pilgrim hospitals: that of La Soledad and that of San Juan de Jabero.

Language

Camponaraya lies in a transition zone between Galician and Leonese, which shows in its place names and in the speech of older people.

It is one of the food-producing centres of El Bierzo, with products of recognised quality:

  • Bierzo roasted pepper (P.G.I.).
  • Botillo del Bierzo (P.G.I.).
