Historical Origin and Evolution

The first documented reference appears in the Fuero de Cerezo of 1146, where it is mentioned as Villamayor de la Sombría, a name alluding to the forests that once covered the area. In the Middle Ages, it was part of the Santo Domingo de la Calzada district and fell under the lordship of the Duke of Frías, who appointed the local mayor.

During the administrative reorganization following the fall of the Ancien Regime, Villamayor del Río briefly became its own municipality within the region of Castilla la Vieja, before finally being incorporated into the municipality of Fresneña. Even so, it always retained a notable independence in its community life.

San Juan de Buradón: A Historic Site Linked to the Camino

Very close to Villamayor del Río stood the Commandery of San Juan de Buradón, of Iberian or Celtiberian origin. Its place name is linked to the god Vorovio, a deity of forests and mountains, reinforcing the sacred importance of the wooded areas in the region.

By 1151 it was already recorded as Sanctus Johannes de Buradon, under the jurisdiction of the Fuero de Cerezo. It belonged to the Knights Hospitaller of St. John of Jerusalem (Order of Malta), who established here one of their watch posts along the Camino de Santiago. In the 13th century, Buradón was the administrative seat of the commandery, holding great influence over neighboring villages, which paid tribute in agricultural and forestry goods.

Later chronicles, such as those of the Enlightenment writer Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos in the 18th century, mention its existence as a house with two bells. After the 1848 disentailment (desamortización), the site was reduced to a leased farm, whose remains deteriorated until they disappeared completely in the 20th century.

Today, Buradón remains in memory as an essential site of the ancient Camino, even though the current route no longer passes directly through it.

Religious and Artistic Heritage

The main religious building in Villamayor del Río is the Church of San Gil Abad, part of the parish of Belorado and belonging to the Oca-Tirón archpriesthood, Diocese of Burgos. Of medieval origin and later renovated, it holds images of popular devotion and serves as the town’s spiritual center.

An interesting detail passed down by the village elders is that there was once a hermitage dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Río, near the current cemetery. After it disappeared, the image was venerated in a niche in the church, until the choir loft collapsed. Its current whereabouts are unknown.
