Hornillos del Camino – Camino Frances

In 2015, UNESCO made an important decision by approving the extension of the Camino de Santiago in Spain, adding this famous route under the name «Routes of Santiago de Compostela: Camino Frances and Routes of Northern Spain». This event marked a significant milestone for the country’s culture and heritage. To support this application, Spain submitted a very detailed dossier known as the «Retrospective Inventory – Associated Elements». Within this inventory, entry number 1168 mentions the village of Hornillos del Camino, located at the heart of this route. Besides being a physical place, Hornillos del Camino stands out for having a rich array of associated elements that are an essential part of the history and tradition of the routes leading to Santiago de Compostela. These elements form a set of features that make this village particularly important in the context of pilgrimage and the culture associated with it.

History of Hornillos del Camino

The first time this village is mentioned in documented records was in the 9th century. At that time, the area was very important because a defensive line ran through here, made up of fortress towers belonging to early Castile. During that period, this village was known by the name Forniellos, which translates as “little kilns”, referring to the kilns where the tiles used in building construction were fired.

Over the years, the village saw the creation of up to three hospitals. One of the most important was the hospital of San Lázaro, intended to care for lepers and pilgrims traveling through the area. There was also another hospital called Santo Espíritu, founded to help pilgrims and travelers passing through the village on their way to other destinations. Over time, however, all these hospitals have disappeared, and only memories of them remain.

A notable discovery took place in 1936, when several Visigothic tombs were found in the area. Inside these tombs, a considerable amount of ancient pottery and other metal objects of great historical and cultural value were discovered. It is also worth mentioning the village’s parish church, built on the main square. This church has been fully renovated, which has allowed it to retain its importance as a central place for the community and its religious activities.
