Villalval
Villalval is a small village in the Provincia de Burgos, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León, belonging to the municipality of Cardeñuela Riopico, within the Alfoz de Burgos. Set right in the Sierra de Atapuerca, it lies just 1.5 km north of the municipal capital, on the western slope beneath the imposing Peña Matgrande, which rises to 1,082 metres.
The Camino de Santiago Frances crosses its municipal land on the stretch from San Juan de Ortega to Orbaneja Riopico, making it a strategic waypoint and resting place for pilgrims heading toward the city of Burgos.

Historical roots of Villalval
Villalval was part of the Alfoz and Jurisdiction of Burgos, within the district of the same name, one of the fourteen that made up the Intendencia de Burgos between 1785 and 1833, according to the 1787 Floridablanca Census. At the time it held royal jurisdiction and was governed by a local mayor (alcalde pedáneo).
For centuries, Villalval was an independent municipality of Castilla la Vieja, registered under INE code 095180. The land registry census recorded 17 households and 53 residents, reflecting an active community for its time. However, between the 1857 census and earlier ones, it disappeared as an independent municipality, becoming part of the municipal area of Cardeñuela Riopico.

Ruined parish church
The old parish church, dedicated to local devotion, is now in ruins. However, there is a restoration project aiming to recover the building and turn it into a pilgrim hostel, which would restore its historic role of welcoming travellers on the Camino de Santiago.
