The Monastery of San Juan de Ortega, founded in the 12th century, is an architectural complex that includes:

  • Church of San Nicolás de Bari: Romanesque in style, home to the famous Annunciation capital.
  • Chapel of the Saint: Where the saint’s remains rest.
  • Cloister of the Hieronymites: Added in the 15th century when the Hieronymite monks took charge of the monastery.
  • Pilgrims’ Shelter: A space set aside for walkers to rest.

The monastery was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1931.

History and Founding of San Juan de Ortega

Juan de Velázquez, known as Santo San Juan de Ortega, was born in Quintanaortuño in 1080. A disciple of Santo Domingo, he devoted his life to improving conditions for pilgrims, building roads and bridges. After being shipwrecked on his return from Jerusalem, he vowed to build a chapel in honour of San Nicolás de Bari, giving rise to the monastery that bears his name.

The Miracle of Light

Twice a year, during the spring and autumn equinoxes, a ray of sunlight enters through a window of the church and sequentially illuminates the Annunciation capital, depicting scenes from the Annunciation to the Nativity. This phenomenon, known as the “Miracle of Light“, lasts about eight minutes and is a testament to the astronomical and architectural knowledge of the time.

The 2 June Pilgrimage

Every 2 June a pilgrimage is held in honour of Santo San Juan de Ortega, bringing together many villages from the district. Participants arrive with their banners and processional crosses, in a display of devotion and tradition that has been maintained for centuries.
