History of Villafranca del Bierzo

The origins of Villafranca del Bierzo date back to the 11th century, when French Benedictine monks from the Orden de Cluny settled in the area under the reign of Alfonso VI of León. These monks founded the monastery of Santa María de Cluniaco, with the aim of caring for the French pilgrims travelling the Camino de Santiago and of introducing vine cultivation to the region.

Over the centuries, Villafranca del Bierzo has witnessed various historical events, from its role as a Roman-era military stronghold to its importance as a marquisate in the Middle Ages. The town has preserved a valuable architectural heritage that reflects its rich history.
