What is there in Airexe

Airexe (Eirexe) is a hamlet in the parish of Ligonde, in the municipality of Monterroso, in Lugo Province, on the Camino Frances.

Its name is a popular variant of the Galician word for “church”, and not by chance: here stands the parish church of Santiago de Ligonde, a Neoclassical building that keeps the Romanesque doorway of the earlier church, beside a stone cross and some old remains such as a medieval sarcophagus. Next to Ligonde, Airexe is for many the practical stop on this part of the stage: it has a public Xunta hostel, a private one with rooms and an inn or two to eat in, halfway between Portomarín and Palas de Rei. Then the Camino continues to Portos, where the detour leaves for the Romanesque church of Vilar de Donas, one of the gems of Galician medieval art, worth the extra walk if your legs allow.

Distances from Airexe

From Airexe to Lestedo it is about 2.3 km.

To Palas de Rei it is about 8.1 km.

And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 75.9 km remain.

Airexe, or Eirexe, in the parish of Ligonde (Monterroso, Lugo Province), lies about 6 km from Palas de Rei. On the Camino Frances it is a hamlet to pass through with a hostel, a few steps from Ligonde, where pilgrims had their own hospital and cemetery.
