Geography of Samos

Located approximately 11 kilometres from Sarria and about 45 kilometres from the city of Lugo, this charming town is an essential waypoint for all the pilgrims making their way to the Cathedral of Santiago in the city of Santiago de Compostela. Because of its strategic location on the route, many of these pilgrims choose to spend the night in the welcoming lodgings offered by the Benedictine monks who live at the Royal Benedictine Abbey of San Xulian de Samos. This abbey is not only notable for its hospitality, but is also recognised as one of the most significant religious centres in all of Galicia. The abbey’s history dates back to the sixth century, a time when the Suebi inhabited the territories we know today as Galicia. This rich cultural and religious heritage adds a deep meaning to the pilgrims’ experience, letting them feel connected not only to their own personal journey, but also to the history of this very special place.
