Hospital de Órbigo on the Camino de Santiago

Hospital de Órbigo is a key stop on the León stretch of the Camino. Pilgrims arrive from San Martín del Camino and cross the historic Puente del Paso Honroso. Crossing it, they find the Iglesia de San Juan, linked to the old Hospitallers, next to the ruins of a former hospital and a stone wayside cross, a symbol of faith on the pilgrimage. History of Hospital de Órbigo

The origin of Hospital de Órbigo dates back to the Middle Ages, when a small settlement existed on the left bank of the Órbigo river, known as Puente del Órbigo, which grew up around the church of Santa María. In the late 16th century, another settlement was established next to the old pilgrims’ hospital, on the right bank of the river, founded by the Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. This new settlement took the name Hospital de Órbigo.

The town witnessed important historical events, such as the battle in the year 456 between the supporters of Theodoric and those of Rechiar. It is believed that Almanzor passed through this town and crossed the old bridge while transporting the bells seized from Santiago de Compostela, on his way to Córdoba. In the 19th century, the inhabitants of Hospital destroyed both ends of the bridge to prevent Napoleon’s troops from crossing.

Puente del Paso Honroso: National Monument

The Puente del Paso Honroso is a 13th-century medieval structure, declared a National Monument in 1939. With 19 arches, this bridge over the Órbigo river is one of the longest on the Camino de Santiago and forms part of the ancient Roman road between Legio (León) and Asturica Augusta (Astorga). Its name comes from a famous tournament held in the Holy Jacobean Year of 1434, known as the “Paso Honroso”.

Medieval Jousting of the Paso Honroso

The Medieval Jousting of the Paso Honroso is a historical re-enactment held since 1997, on the first weekend of June, commemorating the 1434 tournament. During this festival, the town is transformed into a medieval setting with parades of knights, ladies, merchants and peasants, all dressed in period costume. The event culminates in a grand tournament in the tiltyard, recreating the victory of Don Suero de Quiñones.
