Bercianos del Real Camino lies roughly halfway between Burgos and León, in a completely flat area with very little vegetation. This location makes it an essential stopping point for pilgrims travelling the Camino Frances toward the Catedral de Santiago in Santiago de Compostela.

Historical and Cultural Heritage

The history of Bercianos is intrinsically linked to that of Sahagún. The oldest documents mentioning the existence of Bercianos date from around the year 950, when Álvaro Velaz donated the “Villa Mayor” located in Valdejuara to the Monasterio de Sahagún. Bercianos del Real Camino, located in the province of León, owes its name to the settlers from El Bierzo who settled in the area during the Reconquista.

The parish church of El Salvador, dating from the 17th century, holds a beautiful 16th-century Renaissance carving of San Juan Bautista and the tomb of Doña Leonor de Quiñones, Lady of the village.

Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Perales (Hermitage of Our Lady of Perales)

At the entrance to the village stands the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Perales, popularly known as “La Perala.” This religious building was dependent on the Hospital de O Cebreiro in the 12th century.

Natural Surroundings: La Laguna Grande

The Laguna Grande is a steppe wetland located within the municipal boundaries of Bercianos del Real Camino. It covers an area of 15 hectares and is considered one of the richest wetlands in bird variety in the entire province of León.
