Roncesvalles Pilgrim Hostel
The Pilgrim Hostel of the Real Colegiata de Roncesvalles, which opened in March 2011, has become a very special and exclusive place for pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago Frances who present their credential. This hostel offers its guests all the comforts and modern facilities you would expect to find in the most up-to-date, well-equipped hostels, making it an attractive option for those looking for a comfortable place to rest after a long day’s walk.
When the modern hostel fills up with pilgrims, the old hostel opens, located right across from the collegiate church. This older hostel has a capacity of more than 100 beds, meaning that even during periods of high demand, there is usually enough room for all the walkers who wish to stay.
There is also a very lovely and meaningful tradition for pilgrims. Every day at 8 p.m., the pilgrim’s blessing mass is held, although in the winter months the mass is moved earlier to 7 p.m. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, however, the mass is held at 6 p.m., giving all walkers the chance to receive a special blessing before continuing their journey.
Roncesvalles has become a very busy meeting point along the Camino Frances, and although the available infrastructure is not lacking, it’s worth keeping in mind that during certain times of year the number of pilgrims can be really high. So it’s worth practising a little patience, since at these times you may have to wait a bit longer to access the services on offer.
Finally, it’s worth mentioning that those setting out on the Camino de Santiago can obtain the Pilgrim Credential, an important document for pilgrims, for a cost of 3.5 euros. The credential not only gives access to various hostels, but is also a symbol of the road walked and the experience lived throughout this meaningful journey.
Roncesvalles Hostel Opening Hours
The hostel’s reception is open from two in the afternoon until ten at night. It’s important to note that all guests must leave the hostel between six and eight in the morning the following day. This means they need to make sure they leave on time to avoid any inconvenience. As for whether you can leave and come back after the hostel closes, the answer is no – once it closes, you won’t be allowed out again until the following day. Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that the hostel is open all year round, so you can always count on having a place to stay when you need it.
