A Pena

What is there in A Pena

A Pena is a small hamlet in the parish of Santa María de Ferreiros, in the municipality of Paradela, in Lugo Province, on the Camino Frances.

It is one of the eleven places that make up the parish of Ferreiros, which owes its name to the blacksmiths (ferreiros) who for centuries shod horses and nailed the footwear of passing pilgrims. A Pena, a few stone houses among meadows, has little documented history of its own beyond that, and there are no monuments to visit; its interest is that of the hamlets on this stretch, which follow one another almost without a gap and offer a very Galician landscape of stone walls, oaks and hórreos. The Camino arrives here on tarmac from Mirallos, after passing the Romanesque church of Santa María, and continues towards O Couto and As Rozas, ever closer to the Miño valley.
