Footwear for the Camino de Santiago Frances

Anyone who has already walked the Camino de Santiago before knows how important it is to wear good footwear. Those who haven’t had the chance to do it yet should take this information into account.

Footwear for the Camino de Santiago Frances

There is no such thing as the perfect footwear for the Camino de Santiago Frances. Ideally we would carry a pair of boots, a pair of trail shoes and a pair of sandals to swap between as needed. However, due to the weight this would add to our backpack, it is practically unworkable. So we need to choose the best footwear to finish this adventure without damaging our feet.

This choice will depend on a few factors to keep in mind, such as the route we have chosen and the time of year we will be doing it, as well as our own physical characteristics and preferences.

Pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago will not have to deal with major elevation changes or extreme temperatures, but what is certain is that they must prepare to cover many kilometers.

The pilgrim should walk with a staff in hand, a backpack on their back, and their feet should follow 4 basic rules: comfort, lightness, waterproofing and breathability.

We suggest three types of footwear to happily complete the Camino:

  • Boots
  • Trail shoes
  • Sandals

Boots for the Camino de Santiago

High-cut mountain boots are not recommended, as they tend to be quite heavy, stiff and very hot. If you prefer boots for the extra ankle support, it is best to opt for mid-cut boots with an angled collar, so you can walk without discomfort. The angled shape at the back of the collar allows for greater mobility and prevents chafing on the ankle.

It is important that they have a lacing system providing good support and that the tongue is padded to ensure comfort and allow us to move forward safely, protecting us from knocks to the top of the foot.

Rubber reinforcements at the toe and heel are also recommended, as they provide extra safety on rough terrain and prevent the boot from wearing out.

Cushioning is essential, and in boots it usually comes from the combination of a thermo-molded EVA foam insole and a molded EVA midsole. The sole should ideally be made of dual-density carbon rubber, providing maximum grip and durability.

For pilgrims walking the Camino in winter, we recommend boots with a waterproof, breathable membrane. When footwear includes a waterproof membrane, you’ll be better protected on rainy days, but it can be hotter and less breathable if you’re walking on warm days.

Trail Shoes for the Camino de Santiago

Regular sneakers are not recommended for the Camino, as they don’t provide enough protection. They tend to be too flexible, and generally the sole doesn’t offer enough cushioning and grip.

Trekking shoes are ideal for walking the Camino de Santiago. Specialist outdoor brands offer very good models that combine technology, walking comfort and maximum performance. They are ideal for those seeking freedom of movement, lightness and breathability. They are perfect for walking, as in addition to a durable sole that provides excellent traction, they include removable insoles and an EVA midsole that support and stabilize your stride.

As with boots, waterproofing is a factor to consider if you’re setting out on the Camino in winter.

Sandals for the Camino de Santiago

Multifunctional sandals designed to provide freshness and comfort. They are the perfect companion for pilgrims, as they can be worn in summer on some stretches of the Camino and are also perfect for resting after a long day of walking.

Additional Recommendations for Footwear on the Camino de Santiago Frances

  • Do not break in new footwear on the Camino.
Be sure to wear new footwear for short periods of time before setting out on the Camino de Santiago. This way it will be broken in to your feet and you’ll avoid unexpected problems, like the dreaded blisters, which can appear during the first few days of use.
  • Consider your socks.
It is important to try on your footwear with the type of socks you usually wear for walking. Keep in mind that a good pair of socks is essential to getting the most performance out of your footwear.
  • Your foot size.
Try on your usual shoe size as well as one size up to compare comfort and fit between the two.
  • Any mismatch will be painful torture.
Check that the heel fits well, that the big toe isn’t overlapping the others, and that the rest of your toes can move freely. Try on footwear for both feet and choose based on your longer foot.
