What is there in Aquerreta

Aquerreta (Akerreta in Basque) is a village in the valley and municipality of Esteríbar, in Navarra, on the Camino Frances.

You reach it soon after Larrasoaña, after a short climb, and it is one of those places you cross in five minutes: a handful of houses above the Arga valley and fewer than ten registered residents. By the mid-19th century it already had only eight houses, and almost everything revolves around the church of the Transfiguration, medieval in origin, which keeps a Renaissance altarpiece. What makes it known among pilgrims from all over the world is the cinema: the rural hotel in one of the village’s manor houses appears in the film The Way (2010), with Martin Sheen, in the outdoor lunch scene. Leaving Aquerreta, the Camino drops to the river and follows it along a flat, shady path towards Zuriáin.
