Ciruéña is a small municipality in the Santo Domingo de la Calzada area, in La Rioja, on the Camino Frances.
The first image pilgrims take away is unexpected: after kilometres of cereal from Azofra, the Camino skirts a golf course opened in 2003 and a modern housing estate with wide streets that has little to do with the old village. Behind it lies the historic core, with just over a hundred residents, and a much longer history than it looks: in 972 King Sancho Garcés II founded the monastery of San Andrés here, and in the Middle Ages the place was abandoned before being resettled at the end of the 14th century. The municipality includes the hamlet of Ciriñuela, with its church of San Millán. It is a good place for a coffee before the last stretch, with the tower of Santo Domingo de la Calzada already on the horizon.
From Cirueña to Santo Domingo de la Calzada it is about 6 km.
To Grañón it is about 12.5 km.
And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 571.4 km remain.
