Etymology of Azofra
The name “Azofra” comes from the Arabic “as-suxra“, meaning “the tribute“, reflecting the obligation of vassals to work the lord’s lands in exchange for small compensation. This name underlines the Arab influence in the region and the historical importance of the town.
According to Fray Gregorio de Argáiz, the origin of the name comes from the Hebrew “Zophar“, meaning “beautiful” or “beauty“. This name is already mentioned in documents dating from the year 1040
Azofra on the Camino Frances
Located on the Camino de Santiago Francés, Azofra has historically been a place of passage and rest for pilgrims. In 1168, a pilgrims’ hospital was established, founded by Doña Isabel de Azofra, providing assistance to travellers on their way to the Cathedral of Santiago in Santiago de Compostela.

Vera Cruz Brotherhood
Founded between 1650 and 1750, this brotherhood is the only one for Holy Week in Azofra. Made up of around 25 members, it organises iconic processions such as the Holy Burial procession every Good Friday, accompanied by the brotherhood’s drum band.
Azofra Patron Saint Festival
Azofra celebrates its festival in honour of San Roque, patron saint of the town, with events that reflect the community’s rich cultural and religious tradition.
Local Economy
