Vilamaior is a small hamlet in the municipality of Santiago de Compostela, in A Coruna Province, on the Camino Frances.
A kilometre and a half from A Lavacolla, after a gentle climb between meadows and groves, Vilamaior is one of the last rural hamlets pilgrims cross before the landscape becomes urban. A few stone houses, a garden or two and the silence that can still be felt at this point of the day. It has no monuments or documented history of its own, and the honest thing is to say so; its role is that of a last breather before the end. Right after it, the Camino passes the headquarters of Galician television and of Spanish public television, an unexpected landscape of antennas and modern buildings, and soon reaches San Marcos and the Monte do Gozo, from where the cathedral towers finally come into view.
From Vilamaior to San Marcos it is about 2.5 km.
To Monte do Gozo it is about 3.5 km.
And to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Santiago de Compostela, about 9 km remain.
